What did i miss?

I view it as more of the air support around a fleet of naval vessels. In WWII terms, ships like the Gemini and the Carrack and the Endeavour relate much more to naval vessels then they do to bombers. I think you'll find they have quite a bit more survivability than those bombers of days past...
