Excellent, thanks for the info, guys. As far as mods go, the only one i definitely suggest is task force radio, which is a really cool mod that integrates teamspeak into the game as radios. there are a ton of other great mods also (too many to list lol) , but if i had to pick one it would be...

so basically what you're gonna want to do is have a cheaper ship with LTI, then, when the ship you'd like to have LTI on goes on sale, melt the ship you want upgraded and buy an upgrade from your LTI ship to that ship, then apply the upgrade. note that this may cost you additional money...
