I have a feeling it's more like your already established "background" gives you access to special hangars where your ships are stored kind of like how you joined Squadron 42 from a "wealthy background" with all those things already available to you before you joined... so, right off the bat...

Need For Speed 2:SE and 3 were the first PC Games I really wanted to play, and I STILL play NFS games (want to go watch that movie!) the only one I really skipped was The Run... that really didn't interest me AT ALL... but I'm still a fan!
