It depends on the missile and the target, some ships are easier to lock and hit with certain missile types. If a ship has a high heat output then it's easier to lock with IR (heatseeker) missiles, this directly relates to the distance you can get a lock from. You might see that it's 300m when...

I've rented out 3 different size 3 missiles and the 2 size 4 2x3 missile racks to chuck them on my vanguard and get experimenting, will let you know how it goes!
