This is how life kicks me in the balls. If I was still working, I would be able to slip a chat server onto my work server like I used to do with Vent, but if I were still working instead of on disability I'd have precious little time for gaming, given the 60+ hour weeks I used to pull regularly.

Don't quote me, but I think it's packages that have alpha/beta access, although if all you have is a single ship sans package you get a "main" character slot.

I know about the whole instanced thing, but even if you had an instance with only 6 people, 3 on a side, latency is still going to factor in. Someone whose ping is 20ms is going to have an advantage over someone whose ping is 200ms, even if it is a slim one.

There was something like that in Star Frontiers, where your rifle had a camera on it instead of sights and you wore goggles that displayed what the gun "saw" to make it easier to target.
