I didn't mind the Karna once I found you can change firing modes, the charge shot is pretty nice to have. But I have been using the light machine gun for awhile and favor it more.

I think to me at least, the issues show up a bit later as the game gets super repetitive and shallower story wise. But it is a great looking game and does play well!

I would give Aim Hero a try then, you can get it on Steam for fairly cheap and it is basically an FPS trainer with different modes, it might have what you are looking for.

ARMA, Titanfall, Battlefield would be good games to get a feel for different gun plat styles. If you want a small app that helps train reflexes, look into Aim Hero or FPSosu, they are used by professional FPS competitors to warm up and practice before games.
