Thursday brings us Around the Verse with a look at the makers of VoiceAttack and HCS VoicePacks, and your first look at our upcoming "pipes" system in the ATV Fast Forward.

I'm looking forward to that section of Around the Verse. I've purchased a few of the HCS Voice Packs for the Voice Attack voice control software. Being a huge Tom Baker fan I had to buy that one (Midnight) when it was released, and whilst it is tailored primarily to Elite Dangerous, there are enough responses that suit Star Citizen to make it useful. William Shatner's voice pack (Orion) on the other hand has been customised to fit SC like a glove, with a couple of custom profiles to choose from.

Do they help me fly my ship? Well yes, sort of. My memory sucks so being able to shout 'Shields Rear' and 'Release all chaff' (drops both a chaff and flare) and things of that ilk at the computer does help get me out of tight scrapes, but the main benefit is just the joy of having Doctor Who and Captain Kirk as my copilots. Both actors have beautifully rich voices which resonate with my childhood memories every time I hear them speak.

For those who have not come across Voice Attack, it's an application the leverages on Window's voice recognition component and allows you to speak commands, which it then translates into key/mouse actions. The HCS Voice Packs are just a series of 1000 or so recorded responses by various actors (the two I've mentioned, along with actors from Blake's 7, Red Dwarf, and a variety of other backgrounds). You can have voice attack respond with those as part of the actions it takes in response to your commands.

At present only the William Shatner/Orion voice pack is 'Certified Star Citizen Ready' (a full predefined profile being shipped with it to save you from having to set up a bunch of responses yourself), but the most recent Tom Baker/Midnight pack did include an SC profile, that I guess is just not as comprehensive.
