I have never understood why anyone would buy a Cat, when for $50 more you can buy a Carrack. There is such an incredible difference in capability there, that unless you love the Drake line for branding reasons, seems to me anyone would prefer the Carrack.
Well, with how CIG is doing things, the Carrack may be slower, does not have a giant tractor beam, and may end up carrying less cargo after all. The Cat is also smaller and I can really thread the needle flying through stations, which is a lot of fun.

Benefits of the Carrack are guns, sensors, and not having to sacrifice cargo for more options.

Until I can fly the Carrack, I won't really know which one I'd rather have. I got both just in case :)

The Carrack looks good on paper but requires at least 6 to operate well while the Cat only needs 4 because of the 2 fewer turrets. That's 2 for escort duty :)

The official ships' page is saying they both require a crew of 5.

Yeah, we dunno what will happen with the modules in either the Cat or the Carrack, but the Cat is laid out deliberately clumsily. You can't see most of the ship nor most of what is ahead of you with the Cat and it has a tiny shit bridge, while the Carrack may have the most beautiful bridge short of a cap ship. Gimme a Carrack any day. Perfect companion to the Polaris and Star G, whereas the Cat would be embarrassed to find itself in such company.

As far as minimum crew goes, I'd say 1 pilot, 1 engineer, and 1 for every turret as a minimum.

But you're right about style. The more comfortable ship is better for the pilot.

The Carrack has some tricks and the Caterpillar has others.

As for arguing price, the Carrack is going to jump in price. It's not going to be a $55 gap for too much longer. I still view the Caterpillar as a $225 ship though. Even if it isn't the price that everyone else has to pay.

Both are great ships on paper

Modules.

That being said, I love both ships. Carrack was my first love. Unfortunately - or fortunately - she became a Reclaimer. I'll turn my BMM into a Carrack here as soon as I can. The Cat . . .I LOVED her. And I'm holding on to that love. It's the modules you see. I wanted her to be a home base. A jack of all trades ship for me. Again, we will have to see.

I get it, but the Carrack has modules too, and it is just such a BEAUTIFUL! ship. I sometimes can't decide whether I want it to be my home of the Polaris. Now if there were a way to dock them together so one didn't need to choose, that would be cool. The Carrack has the nicer bridge but the Polaris has a pool table.

So once the full game arrives, you will be able to swap out Cat modules. I wonder if you could take 2 of them and hook them up end to end.....
Unfortunately not, the front bays, as they currently are couldn't lock together air tight - plus both bays would open outwards and into each other :(

jokes on you, it'll never be done
Agreed. I think the cat modules will be a long way out, if they are still all on the cards at all. The Cat itself will surely get a rework again - I mean LOOK at it. There is no way to load and unload on the ground, the front bay is feet in the air and so you coudl get a dragonfly out but not into it again.

I love how the cat looks, which is a shame because it is just badly designed from a practical standpoint. Some of the proposed modules are unworkable with the current module size.

Also - prediction time - Dragonfly loading will be dropped for 3.0. I still believe they are having a real problems physically linking and unlinking objects and the current trend started with the cutlass rework and the alien boarding ship to move toward EVA boarding and away from docking collars makes me feel a little more confident about that assertion.

I have both the Cat and the Carrack - I love them both.

I meant more of the SC game..... they will never "finish" working on it.

I think you'll pick the Carrack. Sure the Polaris has a pool table but it does not have drone racing or a retractable battle hoodie.

Depends. If they don't fix the Carrack hangar so it will at least fit a Hornet, it will never be able to go alone. Would just be a big target. If It can refuel fighters, now that makes it interesting for all sorts of things.
