Is it true that you can only CCU limited edition ships into other limited edition ships: Example: 85X into Herald, and not into a DUR?

First and foremost, the below is educated guesswork.
Day 1 Upgrades Available: 85x to: Herald, Gladius Valiant, Caterpillar, Prowler.
Day 2 Upgrades Available: Day 1 List + Orion
Since the schedule shows day 2 as "RSI" day, and the Orion is the only ship they added to the upgrade list, there is probably more to it than just "limited edition." If it was only limited ships, the Phoenix should be added also. All of the RSI ships are available in the Anniversary edition (i.e. with 48 month insurance) and with LTI in the "RSI mega pack" accessed through the comm-link, day 2 expo link.
My theory is that anything hangar or flight ready isn't going to be available for upgrade (minus the ships already available in the store, since they are hyping them for 2.6). Following my theory, today at 1pm when Day 3 starts, we should see Drake ship upgrades that aren't hangar ready. My prediction is the Buccaneer upgrade from 85x, Anniversary Edition Cutlass variants and Dragonflies with 48 month insurance, continued availability of Herald and Caterpillar, and some kind of packs, similar to the RSI packs available today. The only curve ball for drake would be cutlass upgrades, since they are reworking the cutlass and it's kind of "new" again.
Following the same theory, Monday should see the Prospector, Endeavor, and some Hull variant upgrades from 85x. The freelancers and reliants will probably have 48 month insurance availability, and LTI in some pack or another.
Anyway, you get the idea. I already melted my DUR since I only had 6 month insurance. I intend to repurchase with at least the 48 month insurance, which should be available (in theory :)).
If you're really CONCERNed about it, just don't buy any of it yet. The 85x should be available for the whole sale, and you can make the decision to melt on the day of the manufacturer's sale, or on next Sunday during the Grand Finale. If you're still worried that they will pull the 85x LTIs out from under you, you can always buy, melt, buy, melt, etc to get some LTI buyback tokens. Someday, when the 85x to DUR shows up in the store, buy back the 85x LTI and upgrade away :)
Kind of what I was planning to do. I also snagged an Aurora ES with 48 month insurance for $20, just in case. I have confirmed that you can upgrade it to a normal edition. Upgraded it to an Avenger Titan.

Well, I was close. The new upgrades for Day 3 are Buccaneer and Cutlass Blue. Orion is indeed gone til later and unfortunately, there is no LTI, even in the super duper drake pack. Not sure what that mean for LTI availability in future days' packs, but we'll see.
You can upgrade any ship into any other ship that is on sale and is of equal or greater value to your current ship.
IE: 50 Dollar x85 can become any ship that is valued at 50 or more. You can upgrade it as many times as you like, alwasy going up.

Ordinarily, yes. During this sale however, those CCUs are not available. As of today (until tomorrow 1pm pst) you can only upgrade the 85x to:
Herald, Caterpillar, Gladius Valiant, Prowler, Buccaneer, Cutlass Blue
Well that's interesting. They're keeping people from using it as an LTI token on any ship. Haha. Sneaky.
You'll be able to buy your Anniversary Edition of the DUR tomorrow though. Standalone ship only though.
