I have heard rumors that the UEE has pulled back to the Sol system for unknown reason ( i have not confirmed this). We all know citizencon has been canceled. so lets get into this. What if the UEE has gotten intel that the vandul are going to stage a raid in UEE territory, they pull back to Sol and ask drake to do the event Defensecon. we all know drake is kind of a blight on the UEE for pirates using a lot of drake ships. Now at some point toward the end of defencecon the vandul attack the defencecon hall room killing everyone, players and npc's. then a day or so later cig posts a video stating the attack was uncalled for and we are organizing a offensive response and announce squadron 42 releasing fall of this year? no one would suspect it. so could the UEE be planning to use defensecon against drake and create a mass casualty event to force an incoming war? ( i do know the supposedly squadron 42 takes place before star citizen, but this would be one hell of a way to introduce squadron 42. ) anyway just letting my imagination come up with something.

Nah...

CIG just wanted to highlight the Ironclad and the Ironclad Assault. Those are both huge ships in terms of potential sales. Due to the nature of the Odin sale, they could not put Drake last (as always) during ILW, so they had to come up with an in-verse rational for having Drake with the IC/ICA along with this years LTI token, the Bullpup go first. They did that by having ILW go to SOL. I expect we will get another DefenseCon next year, and then in 2028, Casta will be the latest and greatest system and they will put ILW there...

What Vanduul?
The UEE simply wants lure the riff-raff of this and adjacent systems in one place and then carpet bomb the whole thing.
Thats also why they put trackers on all the rented ships. So they can find all the bubbles of resistance by following the flightroutes and comparing notes.
They probably put a remote on all the self-destruct devices too.
Remember when the Empire drew off all the forces from Alderaan?
Same thing all over again.
That's why I for one am grabbing my Ironclad Assault and scrub it thoroughly.
I'll get me my mining ship, a scrapper and some cases of Radergahast.
And sit this whole thing out in some remote asteroid belt doing mining.
The scrapper is for after the Convention.
I'm sure there will be a lot of work...

one problem with this theory: squadron 42's campaign timeline begins in the year 2945, and the current year in SC is 2956.
I've heard TheAstroHistorian bring up his theory that this is CIG's version of the story of the fall of the Roman empire and the sacking of Rome City by the vandals.
He even pointed out that there is a system in the galaxy map on the RSI website that is close to Sol and controlled by Vanduul that does not have a jump point directly into Sol. IIRC that system is called Vega - the system in which the fleet battle between Bishop's fleet and the Vanduul fleet takes place during the Squadron 42 prologue reveal. TheAstroHistorian's arguement is that it's odd that Vega is close to Sol but there's no jump point, leading him to theorize that CIG will at some point reveal a new jump point between Sol and Vega, and the Vanduul found it first.

I smell a drama coming.
The Vanduul surprising Sol with an attack.
Terra refusing to come to the help of their rival.
Blood , sweat and factional warfare galore!
Plus Pirates!
Arrr matey!

If I was in charge of CIG marketing, I'd have the UEE Invictus fleet show up on the last day of DefenseCon with the Anvil Odin as its command ship, assume control of the event, and announce the release of Squadron 42. If CIG wanted to do something epic, that would be it. Announcing SQ42 in some other whimpy way to avoid the release of GTA6 would be marketing garbage by comparison.

Unless my charts are old the most direct vector of attack on Sol from 'Duul controlled space is 3 jumps Calbain>Null>Croshaw>Sol unless that run to Crowshaw is branched on the Large jump between Sol amd Croshaw, in which case its only 2 jumps to get there, but limited by being small jump points either way. Raiding parties only:

For a Large jump point route that would be considered a threat to Sol that'd be Vanguard>Elysium>Idris>Rhetor>Croshaw>Sol. Five jumps but for a sizeable force that's not outside the bounds of reason to hit the source of humanity...?I

So perhaps the UEE has spotted a fleet build up in Vanguard...?

I’d love to see the market research as to how many players are doing both GTA and space sims. My guess is their patrons don’t overlap much.
Weeeeelll....most of the GTA crowd is into glitter and pretty explosions. Narcotics abuse and general mayhem are on the menu too.
So maybe no overlap with your typical simulation crowd.
But with TEST Squardon?
I do see some similarities.
"Hold my beer..."
Ka-BOOM!!!

(Okay, I bet there's a pretty big difference in the predominant age group but hey, I for one intend to play both.)
