It's a nice way of saying deal with it, but I don't think it's going to stop a lot of people from wanting that downgrade. In the last 12 hours they've only sold like 15 more Phoenix. It certainly is going to be rare as hell. I think I'l just keep it, even if they misled us on things. It looks however like it's not a C&C ship by default, but we'l have to use our upgrade on it to get that functionality. The same upgrade that any of the other connies can get.
I haven't read anything in this situation as either "deal with it" or CIG misleading anyone.

It would be good if they learn from this and, in future, ensure the data about ships is as accurate as possible at time of publication, and are perhaps more forthcoming about things. The whole thing about top-of-the-line components would have been a selling point, I think, and potentially reduced some confusion.

He's explaining it, but it's boiling down to they are not going to do much beyond offering a refund in credit. I personally bought a Phoenix in addition to the cool stuff, on the assumption it was going to have a higher tier engine than the other connies in some way. Not just starting with the equivalent in MMO terms of a blue color engine while the Andromeda got a green. I was willing to sacrifice the cargo for the interior. The speed would make up for the smaller cargo (which I thought was 75% of an andromeda but is really 40%) I got it on a min/max decision because I wanted a combat variant and that is what fit the bill. Finding out the day after I bought it that my engines were getting downgraded instead of upgraded just really rubbed me the wrong way.

I understand the whole WIP and subject to change thing, it's just disheartening after dropping a good chunk of cash on it. It's nearly half an Idris in price for the Phoenix. I just think it's going to be completely outclassed in it's role and function when the 890 jump comes out, as that one is 2 decks and is also going to have a deployable. Other things like the Starfarer got outclassed by the banu MM. With this update the freelancer MAX got completely outdone by the Taurus at the same price point. So I see in the future the Phoenix being 1-up'd and outclassed by the 890 for the same price point.

I'm still going to keep mine, because all of the other things I really wanted, and the size up power plant is going to directly translate to an engine boost by being able to divert more power to them in combat, it just won't help cruising speeds as much.

I doubt the 890 JUMP will get the weapon selection the Phoenix gets.

I'm keeping my Phoenix because I have plans for it and on the idea that the upgrades offered will make it a much better ship. I also like the fact that it has several advantages over the others being a more 'top of the line ship'.

The weapon selection no. It's not getting the class 2s, but I'm guessing it's going to be really loaded with class 3s and manned turrets. It may not be quite as combat capable offensively but I expect it to be able to hold it's own very well defensively to protect it's passengers. Likely some defensive missiles as well or it'l get a class 9 like the phoenix.

I understand where you're coming from, but I think making buying decisions on a min/max impulse at this incredibly early stage is risky business. All of these ships are going to be defined and redefined as new ships get created and released. IMO, the wiser course of action is to sign up for a ship at this early date based on its clearest distinction, which in the Pheonix's case is as a "Luxury Touring" vessel.

I don't think there's much more CIG could do, aside from offering actual refunds to people who press for them (which they might do). They're certainly not going to redesign the ship because some disappointed min/maxers misunderstood the point of the ship. They have to build a universe full of ships that all interlace in intricate ways, and they designed the ship for this role for specific reasons that we most likely only know the smallest bit about so far.

A bit more than that.
- The class 9 CIWS is going to be for both missiles and fighters.
This means we have enough time in our likely inebriated states to get to stations and defend the ship before ramming somebody with it. The fact that it hits fighters alone, is going to be very powerful as they won't be able to do closer passes on a Phoenix. The further out they are, the less damage they do and the less they can clip out of view for the turret gunners.

I don't understand why people get so beat-up about ship specs. We don't even know what the real pros and cons are, especially without having a feel for the actual game mechanics or other ships (like the 890, or differences between fuel-carriers like the starfarer vs commodity haulers like the banu). I feel like people want either the best or biggest (everyone will want a personal battlecruiser if they can obtain one). I treat my Phoenix as a neato luxury thing while focusing on the fact that anything I purchase can probably be obtained relatively easily in the actual game. What's really important is that our pledges help the development of the game.

The amount of people with a constellation but no buddies to man the turrets will be sorely depressing at first. The first drunken Friday we'll see half the fleet destroy their constellations by mistake and suddenly the other half will have shipmates! It'll all work out.

I understand the instinct and have felt it in some small regard (I bought a Super Hornet over a Ghost in part because it seemed like the most powerful ship), but I agree. I'm sure many of us are at least somewhat guilty of what you've described, but I was doing my part this last weekend against the min/max mentality. The one that goads me, especially, is this desire that turns into demand to be able to strip the Phoenix of its luxury interior to put back in a full cargo hold. That just smacks to me of blatant buy2win. You can afford a $400 ship and happen to be here during the sale, so you get a Constellation that is statistically superior without any trade-offs, and get to throw away the core concept of the variant?

For whatever reason, that really pushes my anger button.

Pay 2 Win in a dogfight? Pay 2 Win hauling cargo? I'd say a starfarer or merchantman is a better investment for cargo hauling. The "best" constellation, when it comes down to a 1v1 dogfight with other variants is probably going to be such a small difference that the piloting and turreting skills will determine the winner instead of who simply has the better ship - CIG has stated that this is the priority. I'd quit immediately if it was Star Trek Online level nonsense "best equipment wins 90% of the time" with little to no effort required by the player. That's why I'm not particularly worried about minor differences in specifications.

I don't think the Taurus overclass the Freelancer MAX , the MAX will be a lot more faster ( 4xTR5 like a constellation, others freelancer have only 2xTR5) , will consume less fuel (said on the freelancer commercial) , have more weapons . They are just not for the same purpose , i m not sure it will be a good idea to make some trade with a Taurus on a low security sector , pirates will love a target like the Taurus .
Then the Taurus will be awesome to make trade on a high security area , or with some escort.

About the Phoenix , i just didn't like the interior it's why i m not buying it , i prefer my Andromeda who is looking more like a Millenium Falcon and for me the Andromeda is really what i want a multi function ship able to defend itself and trade. But i can understand why people get a Phoenix , it will be a better ship when it come to defense ( like a armored car for vip), then said so many time it will be a flagship , i guess the phoenix will have some command ship ability.

The Aquila i have no idea if it's better than a DUR , i didn't read so much about exploration , i suppose the Aquila will be better to doing some stuff like exploring a planet ( like on the commercial) , then the DUR will be better for others thing ?

Edit : about replacing the Phoenix interior with more cargo , they don't say they are going to do it , they say maybe in the future we will do it after the launch of the game in 2 years when everyone will forgot about the phoenix interior ( look like to me a way to calm down people who are crying without doing something)

I definitely agree, I would much prefer it to not be able to be stripped to a Super Andromeda, i.e. every variant is about checks and balances. You give up cargo space for shiny furniture, better power capabilities, a voyeur's/exhibitionist's dream shower, better defense weapons, and some fancy doodads (upgraded fighter plus rover). But the fact that they've mentioned it means that they're seriously entertaining the possibility.

Yeah, right there, no "guaranteed" word, but that's pretty convincing wording that they are at least considering it!

Q. Can I remove the ‘luxury’ interior of the Phoenix to increase cargo space?
A. We would like to do this in the future. All ships will have some degree of internal customization at launch (similar to the Hangar – after all, you have to put your piano somewhere!) and we plan to expand that as we go… but making the ships flyable and allowing you to alter pre-set hardpoints. (Note that there are also internal hardpoints; the Constellation has space to install mission-specific panels, as mentioned in the brochure!) So, for everyone wanting to remove the hot tub/luxury interior to have a statistically superior Constellation… we hear you and will be keeping that in mind as development goes forward. But we’re not prepared to promise it at launch at this point.

It seems reasonably clear the bigger engine capacity and the Class 9 turret will be Phoenix specific upgrades that will be unavailable on the Andromeda and other models.

But then there's that second post:

Q. What happened to the ‘space superiority’ role for the Constellation?
A. There has been no change in this regard when it comes to gameplay! We may use different terminology for the in-universe sale page, but the Constellation Andromeda (the original model) is still a space superiority platform. Remember Chris once promised that the Constellation could reasonably take on three Hornets… and you were able to see him and his crew do just that in the recent Gamescom live demo!

That makes it seem like the Andromeda is at least somewhat intended to be the Millennium Falcon (looks like a piece of junk but has awesome performance) that so many people want?

Actually since they said that you could add a P-52 to the Aquilla, that also seems quite tempting. I can imagine long range sensors and expanded fuel reserves would actually give more of an advantage for the initial exploration phase (or as an enhanced pair of eyes for the fleet?). I understand that one turret becomes the sensors/science package, but I'm surprised no cargo room was lost to make way for the rover or the expanded fuel reserves. We assume the extended fuel is in place of the missile mounts? But the increased weapons and mounts of the Andromeda and the Phoenix would be more suited to exploring/patrolling hostile areas/

Does anyone know about the max crew value? It is just a theoretical value of how many people could function aboard the ship? Or is it a number recommended to operate all the weapons/systems/pilot? I just wondered why the Andromeda is the only one with crew capacity 5. I guess I would have expected the Phoenix to have fewer with all the extras (and an automated defense turret). Any indication why the Aquilla would have fewer max crew?

Almost everything limited has had at least base value if not a higher value after it goes off sale? Or have there been any exceptions? I was considering purchasing the Phoenix Upgrade now, but not applying it, since I'm still not really sold on how beneficial its upgrades will be . Then either melt it for something else (perhaps an Aquilla upgrade or another ship?) or sell it/trade it on the trading forums?

I think no matter what, if you have a Constellation LTI package, it's important to not apply the upgrade yet (Though I assume they'd let us know if there was a deadline for applying it before launch?)

With this new information, what are people leaning towards? My gut still says to stick with the Andromeda since it seems to be highly adaptable between roles (fighting/trading/exploring) and even though it would never be the best at any specific role, you could always improve it for certain functions with a few upgrades/strips?

I like what I heard one person say on the official forums: The Andromeda is the Millenium Falcon. The Phoenix is the Lady Luck. They both have cargo capacity, self-defense capabilities, and are pretty quick, but the feel of the two are completely different.

That analogy makes more sense to me than the SUV one, haha!

The Lady Luck! Brb, gotta go play Jedi Outcast again!

It's actually a shame most of the EU got retconned though.

my favorite thing about the constellation is the P52
i'd love to pilot that, it looks nimble as all get out.
The reason i didn't get a connie is so that i can fly the P52 for someone
Well you're always welcome to take my P52 out for a spin! And as an added bonus, we boys down at the Science Division are working on a prototype combat helmet that has an incredibly detailed HUD and also dispenses beer, almost like a super advanced version of one of these:

or

I should warn you that we haven't worked out all the kinks yet. Our last pilot um....drowned in beer because the flow didn't properly shut off. But barring that, I hope it makes for a more pleasant piloting experience. The only think I'd hope you could do in return is take some epic dashcam footage of Aurora Crash!
