I got an i3 to start out my PC(I was broke, cut me some slack), but now it's time to upgrade that CPU. My question: should I use the same socket, or get one of those new devil's canyon CPUs? Does devil's canyon/haswell have any advantage over ivy bridge?

Pretty sure you have to get the same socket. Just make sure that the CPU socket is compatible with your motherboard.

Z77 is pretty close to 87/97. Unless you had a low end board now, I would just grab the 3770k of you want to save money. If not, the 4590/4790k will be a good jump. 87/97 has more usb3 sata3, pcie 3 (needed for high end crossfire or 980/290x to prevent bottleneck.)

What board are you running and what budget?

I'm running a Gigabyte H77-DS3H. My budget is about 300$, maybe a bit more, IDK until after christmas.

3770k is your best CPU choice, if you can find one. Otherwise you're looking at a complete motherboard/CPU upgrade and likely RAM as well. Make sure your BIOS is updated before you go sticking another CPU in there. The one thing Intel is not good at is long-term socket upgradability, they change sockets more often than many gamers change underwear. You're looking at $400 for a 3770k unless you can find a deal, which is not hard to do if you keep your eyes on pricewatch.com, in fact I see one for $318 right now. Don't forget shipping and taxes.

I've got an H77 chipset, should I upgrade that? And why would I need to upgrade DDR3 1600 16GB of RAM?

DDR3 1600 you wouldn't have to upgrade, I didn't look at the RAM specs for H77. You might still want to, but definitely not have to. Chipset comes with the motherboard, I don't think I've ever met anyone who ever swapped a chipset on the same motherboard.

I know the chipset is integrated, you can't swap it. I meant to ask if I should upgrade the motherboard.

ok, just making sure

If you want anything better than the 3770k, you will have to upgrade the motherboard. Just make sure the board you plan to get supports your memory. It should, DDR3 1600MHz is pretty standard.

I've got a cooler master hyper 212 EVO. Apparently it's awesome.

What would you guys recommend for a motherboard?

If you swap motherboard go up to a z97. The H platform can not OVERCLOCK and is limited pcie bandwidth. Plus you need to make sure the VRMs are cool by the cou socket if you put a 3770k in.

The Evo is a good cooler. No need to swap.

Ouch, that sounds like a bottleneck. Better upgrade that, I was planning on OCing my CPU. Does the H platform handle GPU overclocks?

It will handle a GPU OC fine, just not a CPU. Unless you run more than 1 GPU, bottleneck lanes is not an issue. Now, you will be very CPU limited down the line though. Thats up to 30% in OC performance missing due to the H platforms.

Ouch, definitely going to upgrade that motherboard.

My poor wallet.

Cooler Master is good, though a bit louder than the Zalman (I bought components specifically for near-silent running).

When you go shopping, bling is not important. Example: You can get a Maximus VII Formula, or you can go with a Z97-E. The Formula has all sorts of features and extra ports and a fancy motherboard cover with coloured slots and shiny, while the Z97-E gives you a plain board with the bare bones (but still includes multi-GPU capability). Performance tweaking is a little easier on the Formula but you can get nearly identical performance from both boards with a bit of effort, and for less than half the price on the Z-97E. not that I am saying go with that exact board, just giving one possible example.

Yes, I'm looking for a board that will handle overclocks and have multi GPU capability for the future. I really don't want to spend more than 200 on this, that's overkill for a motherboard IMO. Can I get multi GPU for sub 200$?

A board for under 200? Yep. Can do that. You want to stick with a z77?
