. . .design your own ship?

Does this mean we'll have the ability to redesign ships in game and get permission to fly them in the PU? Could this lead to specialist modding services that you take your ship to and have altered to your liking, then passed through CIG?

No.

It was CIG's idea when they thought they were building a much smaller old-school mmo game that you could host your own servers with your own mods, which seems more and more unrealistic patch by patch.

That was back in the day when Star Citizen was being designed around having people being able to run their own private servers to run mods on. As far as I know that ship sailed a long time ago. But its been a long time since I've checked so who knows.

Can't really say for sure that the private servers will no longer be a thing. SQ42 is still definitely a thing, and I was just about to boot into AC, which also remains a thing. So as long as those two, or even just one of them, is/are still things, there's a clear path to private servers as well.
Besides, they're still very much selling this item. So it doesn't seem like they'd have entirely scrapped the idea.

Kind of funny to read the specs they recommend compared with what we currently require:
  • Windows 8 (64bit), Windows 10 – Anniversary Update (64bit)
  • DirectX 11.1 Graphics Card with 3GB RAM (4GB strongly recommended)
  • Quad Core CPU with AVX instructions (Intel’s Sandy Bridge processor and AMD’s Bulldozer processor or newer) and 16GB+ RAM
  • SSD strongly recommended

My only hope if for some reason SC / CIG shuts down in the (hopefully far far) future, that they open-source the server code. It would at least save some of us the effort of having to reverse engineer it. I would hope they would do the same for the client, but that may be too much to ever hope for.

I wonder if those are considered "recommended" or are "minimumn" requirements (the download page doesn't specify). I meet/exceed all those and running through a port still tanks my FPS. Heres to hoping the gen 12 update fixes some of that. Oh well, me harping on game performance is worth an entire thread in and of itself.

They might eventually deliver on that offer. But would be well after SQ42 releases.
The problem with that is with players running their own mod-able servers, I think they'll start losing out on ship sales, a huge part of their income at this point. So why I don't think it's out of the question, I don't think it will happen until closer to Star Citizen's end of life.

If they ever changed the plan about quitting ship sales on launch, I sure missed that. I mean, I wouldn't be all that surprised if they wanted to keep doing that once they start running the game for profit, but at the very least I think that's still the plan. Just a couple days ago someone asked on Spectrum how long you got to apply the CCUs, and every answer was still 'until beta.'

Besides, being able to preview ships on a private server with like dozen or so other people isn't really all that different from IAE events, they just stop being time limited. I don't really think that'd cut into sales, heck, it'd probably encourage sales. The main universe is after all where the whole MMO is happening, private servers are just that, private. You wouldn't buy a Porsche just to keep it in your garage for your wife and kids, and the occasional visitor, to gawk at.

So all in all, there's really no downside to releasing private servers even right at launch, though they're probably way down the priority list so we'll probably only see them a year or two after.
