Have you ever had that experience where you think you've got something (or someone by the balls), and you gloat about it only to get a face full of shit? That's what we call Schadenfreude.

The most recent example of Schadenfreude in the history of the Internet.
Now, bear with me. I'm going somewhere with this. You've seen athletes and sports teams completely biff that sure-as-fuck victory by celebrating early. By assuming their victory is assured. And the like. Then suddenly, the opposing team brings the smack-down.

This happened to USC in a volleyball game recently.
You're probably sputtering at me now. "What the hell does this have to do with TEST?!"

Well, again, it's more about reminding y'all that while we're all about fun and games, there will be times every now and then that we'll need to think seriously, act seriously, and do seriously.

Let's say for example, the Great Lord and God of TEST Montoya hands down a directive that says thusly:

"Set forth and capture a station!"
- Montoya, maybe.
We can have fun doing this. We can be crazy and lunatical. But in some ways, we all have goals and objectives, too. If we're playing together with a goal in mind, there's one thing I would like to emphasize: follow-through.

Always follow through on your battles. Always follow through with your actions. Always follow through on anything you do that has to do with a goal, objective, or intent. Make certain you lock that shit down so that any threat, any opposition can't strike back when you're not looking.

If we're in a battle, and we're winning, don't assume that the rest of the battle will be a cakewalk. Give it your all.

If we're mining, and we're getting fat in the wallet, don't get complacent. A pirate might be sneaking up on your whale-like ass like Captain Ahab chasing down Moby Dick.

If we're flying in a Carrack, and we've got a job to do - be it finding a jump point, finding some resources, or just scoping out the system - we stay alert, we stay on the ball, and we follow through on the data as thoroughly as possible for the sake (and safety) of those who would follow after us.

Stupidity can manifest in unexpected ways. There's two kinds of stupidity: willful stupidity, and stupidity borne of ignorance. One of the easiest game examples to look at is EVE Online, as one of the most glorious examples of human ignorance and stupidity resulting in direct, self-inflicted pain. Basically, EVE facilitates both kinds of stupidity.

You've got imbeciles carrying a not-so-small sum of currency - what was it? Ah yes, PLEX. That shit's worth more than a few million ISK in-game. A single PLEX is worth about one month's subscription, so around $15-$20. He was hauling that PLEX in a frigate, got scanned, then ganked in Jita of all places. All that PLEX evaporated. Killmail here: http://eve-kill.net/?a=kill_detail&kll_id=18072736

In Star Citizen, these kinds of scenarios will happen when you don't have people paying attention to their surroundings. It'll happen when you decide to AFK in the middle of an asteroid belt, thinking you're safe. It'll happen when you're traveling through Sol carrying a rare-as-fuck Nuclear Warhead (yes, nukes are likely going to be a thing), and you think the UEE is gonna keep you safe. It'll happen when you decide to have light security guarding that Cruiser derelict you and your team/squad are working on bringing back online.

You've got something going on, and nobody panics. But introduce an unexpected element, and then everybody loses their minds.

Now, I'm not posting this article here with the intent to ensure that TEST will immunize themselves against both willful stupidity and ignorant stupidity. I'm posting this to explain that this will happen, and it will happen regularly. What we need to do, is encourage each other to improve, and to not be blindsided by tunnel vision, ego, or pride.

We are an organization of equals, and thus we should be able to say, "Check yo'self, before you wreck yo'self." We shouldn't be afraid to encourage each other to improve, and better ourselves when it comes to being TESTbros.

Let's be the ones to humiliate our opponents, not the other way around. And we'll have fun at the same time! :3

In closing, here's a compilation of sports celebration fails on YouTube. Enjoy!

At first I was Nkato....wtf. But my alter ego... Or real life kicked in. Not enough beer I guess.

As I tell my soldiers... Complacency kills. You do the same job everyday and nothing happens. That does not mean let down your guard. Everyday someone watches what we do or how we do it. Do the right thing even when no ones looking and don't set predictable patterns.

Applying that to Nkato's post and I get it.... Play time drinking is fun... It's why I joined test. But when I'm trying to get my track time down or complete the 18 waves of vanduul and swarm I focus and turn on... Maybe not my adult button... But my serious button (why so serious?). Hell yeah in still drinking but a job, mission, or even an in game goal requires focus and commitment. Don't celebrate the early win and don't celebrate the easy win. You never know what's behind that next corner.

Off the sofa-box (don't have a soap box) and back to drinking.

I am and always will be a very serious person (usually). I just also tend to derp most of the time. Expect me to faithfully follow orders to the letter, until I crash into something >_>.

Also known in EVE as "Keep your eyes on the d-scan." The second guard gets let down, the second you get cocky or celebrate early, boom, dead. And not the good kind either. In every sport, in every action, in everything there is a follow through, and that begins not post getting the prize, it begins beforehand. Just because you see it, doesn't mean your done, in reality, you're only half way there. The goal is never just "I'm going to mine today" or "I want to find <x>" or "I want to pew-pew some guys," It's "I'm going to <x> and get home with myself safely first, and the riches later"

And I repeat myself "I'm going to <x> and get home with myself safely first, and the riches later"

That is follow-through., or at least, how I would define it given the circumstances. Celebrate when it's 101% over. With beer.

Side-note: PLEX is currently worth 990MILLION ISK. 38 PLEX is almost 38BILLION, and is also about 760USD. Don't be that guy.

You mean, like this? I feel sorry for that guy, having a fleet of W-space miners, and getting dunked because his corpmates were all too stupid to be diligent about their environment.

Big fan of this philosophy. My family has a saying: "If you're going to do something, do it right the first time." It's a similar idea to what Kato is saying. Do your best no matter what the circumstances are.

Same thing with gaming. I'm rarely the best in a game, but I can usually work my way up to a high position. I love when people underestimate me. That's when I go full tryhard and absolutely embarrass them.

Let's not let ourselves become embarrassed by laziness/complacency.

Exactly that. As an ex-wormhole citizen, I know the dangers of "deepest space" and the only time I lost anything worth more than 20mil (Which is probably 15 minutes of work for me, essentially worthless) was the time I went 2 minutes without checking the scanners. 2 minutes. that's all it takes.

Great post NKato. I think TEST does give off the image that we're all fun and no srs bidness.. but in reality, after gaming with a lot of you, I know that we have our moments when we really get into things and want to do well not only for ourselves but for eachother. In a sense, TEST has become a huge family for not just me but most of you too - and no one likes letting their family down. We're essentially what equates to the Al Bundy Mafia. If you don't know who Al Bundy is you had no childhood.

Makes sense, it's a sound practice for life itself in many ways.

Always be ready. During my short time in EVE, I only ever once lost a mining ship, and it was literally my first one I'd bought. After that, I never even considered beginning mining without pre-aligning myself, I never went AFK, and I never lost a ship under non-combat circumstances. I fully intend on having plenty of time to fuck off and goof around too, but you have to practice good habits until they're natural, and keep aware so you don't become lazy.

Agree, 100%. We're a fun... wait, no, we're THE fun Org in Star Citizen, but that doesn't mean we're all about getting drunk and doing stupid stuff. That's just our public front.

"Set forth and capture a station!"
- Montoya, maybe.

You had me at this obscure and vague quote that Montoya may or may not have said
Love that guy

Good work, we need more Montoya quotes.
In fact we need a whole thread!

One time i was doing a Level 3 drone mission in my Drake. I was doing well and had to take the trash out. Came back 2 mins later and I was in hull and it was going fast. Lost the ship and learned you never go afk on a mission.
Going afk in a combat mission? I didn't even do that in my overtanked domi, and it was meant to be an afk mission runner.
