Ok, so I bought the family a Disney Cruise Vacation - Bahamas with my Trump bonus bump :). I need advice on how to cruise... not talking about montoya's 600i...

Should I buy or register for anything special before hand? Any general advice?

The cruise companies make 90% of their profit from what you spend on-board, the ticket price is just to cover most of the expense of the ships running costs and port taxes.

Check out the locations your visiting and see if there is anything you want to do there, if so Google and see if you can find a company offering it at a good price. The tour operators on the boats offer good packages, but both the company running the excursion and the cruise line will make a profit on it. That said you do have the safety net of it being a tour/excursion booked through the cruise line which gives you better rights of the tour goes wrong for whatever reason.

Having worked the cruise industry for over 7 years a while back I'd have to say it's a personal choice. Spend a little extra and get a decent tour and knowledge that it's safety netted by the cruise line, or save a few bucks and book it yourself but have little or no safety netting. Personally I'd spend the extra, especially if it's a family vacation.

Just my 2 pennies worth.

Either way, have an awesome time. I miss my time on the boats.

I've cruised a couple of times with the wife before we had kids. We're definitely going to go Disney for our next cruise in a few years now that the girls are in the picture.
I've found booking shore excursions through the boat has paid off more than once. For instance a catamaran tour of the two peaks on St. Lucia turned out to be a bi-hulled flat top passenger ferry. Norwegian refunded the cost when we got back on the boat when I talked to one of the folks since it didn't match the description. If I'd booked it through the excursion website at 60% of the cost that wouldn't have happened. I just view it as a form of trip insurance to book through the boat.
Also look into the drinks package if you're planning on lubricating the whole trip. They add up fast and oddly not every bar on board always has the same drinks. On the 10 day south eastern Caribbean we did last time there were only two bars that said they had the mix to make a Rum Runner!

Cruises are best if you spend the whole time drunk. If money's not a huge issue, than i definitely recommend the excursions, though those get pretty damn expensive. If you're not doing an excursion in port, give it a quick google to see if there's anything special you want to do. Cruise towns are fairly good for wandering around shopping, if that's your thing, too.
