Do I Really Need a Fighter?

Finally, there are a lot of us with extra ships...we can't fly them all at the same time... come crew with us or maybe help escort us....if I need a fighter escort, I would rather get a real person over an NPC, even if I have to loan them a ship to do so.
Is this a place to make a plug for the notion of the folks here to loan their ships to others who can't afford what they'd like to fly? Seems like a great team-building exercise to me. Lots of us have way more ships than we can field. If there is someone flying an Aurora or Mustang and your SuperhHornet is just sitting, why not offer a fellow Testie some fun time?

Literally already something discussed starting years ago. There absolutely is a "ship rental" program in some form or another going to be in place for Test Squadron. But its success does depend greatly on people not being stupid with other peoples ships, so good luck with that.

I lend my ship out all the time to those who don't have what I have, so they can actualy do mission in them in PU and get a real feling of how they are not just testing in AC ;)

Also, there is a difference (to me at least) between loaning a person a ship who is going on a mission with you, as compared to loaning someone a ship to "play around in".

In the test universe, I will be glad to loan out a ship to let you play around in. Once the game goes live, I think it will depend a lot more on the person, their reputation for fighting smart, and how well I know them.

If they cover the costs of everything uninsured, I can't see how it would be much concern. Suppose they paid you the costs of all weapons up front? Would you not then have no risk?

That depends entirely on how easy it is to use the in-game ship replacement program, and what effect (if any) losing a ship will have on insurance. Along with several other factors like I don't want to loan my ship to someone who is going to be doing dumb shit, just because they can afford it. There is a difference between having fun in the game, and trolling your corp.

Drake Buccaneer is cool to look at but if I don't plan on being a pirate, bounty hunter, or part of a security detail will I need it in the PU?
Should I instead opt for a second Cutlass?
IMO Fighters are overpriced in the comparsion. I'd sorta let the Cutlass slip since it isn't really a fighter anymore and the rework looks cool, but IMO you get the choice between buying something inferior or spending so much you'd get a fairly big ship for it.

As a very unconventional suggestion, I'd like to bring up the Retaliator base.

I guess with the upcoming AI Turrets and Quad-Mounts, you could use it as some sort of One-Man-Gunship while still having the versatility of doing cargo runs (even without modules) and 2 Module Slots to gear it toward whatever else you want to do with it.

The 150$ would be too much for me for a 2nd Ship, unless I manage to win something to melt or squeeze some bucks off the price by using 0$ CCU.

btw. do 0$ CCU get deleted if the price increases if you dont apply them before? <.<

I have not heard anything about quad mounts, but have been hoping for this from the start. Does anyone have any detail about this? Is it a real thing? Is it just for turrets, or is there a possibility we will be able to mount quad S1s into larger gimbals like those on the Prowler? Will we be able to mount triple S2s on an S6 gimbal?

The Hurricane for example does have a quad mount turret.

From what I've heard Quad works with just taking one size down from twin mount.

No I got plenty 0$ CCU in my hangar and in my buyback that I can recall that the same CCU in the store today are not 0$ any more.
So yes anything you got in the hangar or buyback you pay not more than you payed for it when you got it, no matter what the price is in the store.

Cool... guess there's hope for me to get something bigger than a Herald as 2nd Ship then... :P

This isn't true by the way. I melted my explorer pack, fiddled around with loads of ships, just bought my explorer pack back and it cost me more. Price dun gone up over in UK due to exchange rates.

You should be OK in the USA as you don't get ripped off on everything.

Well that is just the exchange rate that have been corected but in general not counting to exchaneg rate going up and down, what you pay is what you buy back for.. ;)
For me the exchange change haven't change rather gone down so I pay less than I did when bought it first time at the moment when I do buy back.
so it might vary litle up and down..

Yes it's a shame though as I didn't realise it could happen. So when i decided to melt my stuff to have a play around with other stuff, I've lost $100+ worth of credits effectively. Big mistake I made.

Ouch! That's a low blow, I always check the difference on google comparing the price of a ship or buyback.. The different currency in the store.
Ex. 110 Euro or 100USD to my SEK or it might be 95GBP for same then I compare that to my SEK and so on untill I now wich currency give me the best price.
You can go all the way to last step in your cart before confirming the buy and then abort it and remove the ship from the cart and start over in another currency..
I do that all the time when I am not shore the one I have chosen will give me the best price at the moment.
This is how I do it to lose as litle on the VAT exchange toward my currency, by using google puting in like 100USD to SEK witch is my currency or GBP or EURO that way I se wich I pay the least in my currency.

;)

To kinda pull this thread back to the whole "do I need a fighter?" question, let me just say this.

I recently just saw the light and was thinking why on Earth do I have all these smaller ships that fill roles that kind of blend together?

I consolidated my smaller ships and I'm down to a Cutlass Black, Caterpillar, Connie Aqiula, and 3 Dragonflies. Fighters are cool, but if I really want to get in a fight the Cutlass has the armor of a tank and enough firepower to deter most enemies. The Cat is my baby for all things transport/smuggling, and lastly the Aquila is filling my deep desire to just check out the unknown and bumble along on the surface of planets.

So do you need a fighter? No. Would it hurt to have at least one? No.

The Anvil Hurricane concept sale kind of put it in perspective for me. Fighters are so constrained in their roles and pretty much one dimensional. So, goodbye Buccy, hello Red. If I feel the need to shoot something up, there will always be Arena Commander.

I like the Redeemer. You could actually solo it if need be and still lay down some wicked firepower. And as you just stated, its not as one dimensional as a dedicated fighter.
