I have a theory. Space travel won't be commonplace untill we have started using fusion reactors on earth for our rnergy needs. This will create a need for helium-3, wich is rare on earth but exists in abundance on the moon. Getting to the moon and back is expensive as fuck so this will spark harvesting resources from asteroids. Both precious metals and especially for fuel.

Then the real space race can begin.
