Dual Universe looks interesting enough for me to throw it a few bucks on the Kickstarter that went live today. I also created a test squadron group in the game if anyone else backed it.

I've done a prerty good job of avoiding any games with a subscription, but I'm cautiously dipping my toes I to this one. The subscription probably won't kick in for like 2 years anyway.

Nope - I never play subscription games.

Played pinball and table top games enough.
Thanks for info anyway.
Enjoy.

Some of our streamers met with these guys at PAX West, nice bunch and it looks like a great game.

I think most of us have way too much laser focus on Star Citizen, but I do want to see SciFi games like Dual Universe succeed and prosper!

Take a look at their kick starter and see if this is something that interests you!

I love the project, and it looks like a beautiful system. That being said I have serious issues with the payment structure.

"We're all-subscription, no microtransactions or free-to-play elements!" is a great way to capitalize on the nostalgia that, frankly, drives Kickstarter as a system - but pure-subscription models aren't working anymore. No new MMO (at least not since the Lineage II days) has managed to launch itself on a pure subscription system, and most of the old pure-subscription models have lost the momentum that let them stay pure-sub.

Their DAC system sounds like EVE's PLEX system, which has been aped by every subscription model from WildStar to World of Warcraft at this point. On the one hand, that sounds like a pretty fantastic pedigree... but on the other, EVE has never been huge, and most new adopters seize on the system because their subscribers have begun to falter. Even EVE has had to introduce a free-to-play system just to keep user-counts up.

I don't see a pure subscription system working for them. At very least, not for long.

You raise some good points, but if being subscribed to a monthly fee gives people enough benefits to make it worth their while, it may work.

For example, F2P Planetside2 gives you daily XP bonus just for logging in once a day and not even playing if you are a subscriber. That XP translates into being able to buy all the cool weapons and skins.

Final Fantasy 14 is going pretty strong on pure subscription. Idk how long this will last though, but their player base is sitting around 6 million I believe. As previously stated im gnna stick with SC and I as well hope more games like this flourish.

I am honored that senpai saw fit to notice me. Please accept my humblest uguuu.

Keep in mind your own caveat - F2P Planetside 2. The subscription is a benefit, a bonus, not a base state; they need the free-to-play hook to get people invested. Dual Universe isn't doing that - they're selling the system as subscription-only, not freemium-with-subscription-bonuses. If you need a sub just to play, you're not getting bonuses for subscribing. You're paying money to play at all.

@DontTouchMyHoHos raises a good point with FF14, I actually forgot that FF14 existed (which is shameful for me, I used to play the damn game!). I think a lot of that is the strength of the Final Fantasy name and the fact that it's console-supported, which in and of itself gives them an enormous playerbase bump. EVE and WoW don't have either of these things, which is why they needed something else to get them players. I think DU will find itself with a similar issue.

While I agree that most P2P games have failed and gone F2P lately, I don't see this as a failure of the model. I think a subscription model is still very viable. The problem is the developers. The games themselves are the failure. I don't see the problem as a paid vs free issue or a sandbox vs. themepark. I see it as a glaring lack of content.

To be honest, I am sick of the catchphrases like "sandbox", "emergent gameplay", "player run economy", and "players can do whatever they want". They are less of a description and more of a way for developers to excuse the complete lack of long term content. I am completely tired of developers using open PVP as their exclusive end game. It just doesn't work by itself. It doesn't work in a sub model and it doesn't even work on a free model.

That's why I am invested in SC. They have demonstrated their intent to include actual end game content. It's not going to be just setting us loose on each other. It's not just going to be "you can do whatever you want". They are pushing for an actual reason to do these activities. They are not just using the word "sandbox" as an excuse for lazy development.

Well I've paid subs in the past and I probably would again if needed.

The best thing is with star citizen, when you pay, you get awesome ships as a reward! Win win!!
