Hey guys hope you are all well. can anybody give me some of the basics about the IAE? it's my first time at one of the events and i don't want to blink and miss an opportunity to buy something.

Things such as does timing matter regarding purchases or can anything be bought at anytime?
Are there any deals to be made if I wait until the end?
Should I get the MSR or 600i Explorer over the Andromeda/Phoenix
Team Cap or Team Ironman
Where do babies come from.... y'know those real tough questions that we all have to know to navigate an IAE event.

Thanks for the input guys. Hope to see you in game soon.

From memory (I could be wrong, last year was my first IAE):
Things such as does timing matter regarding purchases or can anything be bought at anytime?
Each manufacturer has a "day" assigned to them, which is when their ships are available to buy (and rent for free 48 hours test fly). The ships are available to rent the following day, and I believe they remain in the store from that time until the IAE ends.

There are also hull-limited ships which are released in waves on the respective manufacturer's day - Known as F5 wars due to the limited number of ships and speed with which they sell out.
Are there any deals to be made if I wait until the end?
There will be new ships (flyable and concept) and associated packages which will have "Warbond" discount (requires cash to buy), as well as a "Warbond CCU" for one ship from a manufacturer whose "day" it was. This will be available for that day, then removed from the store until the last 2-3 days, when all these will be available again. The newly released (to flyable) ships will also likely have discount Warbod CCU's as well.
On the BIS day, we will also likely see Warbond CCU's for the final 4 ships, which will also be available on the last 2-3 days.

If you are interested in CCU's, the last 2-3 days are the best for this [1]. If buying ships "as is", the day you buy one on makes no difference.
Should I get the MSR or 600i Explorer over the Andromeda/Phoenix
Thats a personal choice (I don't like the Constellation family of ships in general, but the Phoenix seems bearable). Of these, all except the Phoenix will be available from their manufacturer's day, while the Phoenix is a "hull limited" ship, so only available on the one day, and only if you are lucky.

[1] There will also be "concept" ships without "Warbond" CCU's available, which are still worth bearing in mind: The Vulture, Hull C, Spirit (family of ships), Lynx rover (although I don't believe that's had a concept sale yet), SRV, BMM, X1 (family), San'tok Yai, and possible several more are in active development, and likely to be released in the coming year, at which time their price will increase, providing "savings" if you hold a CCU to them in your hangar.

Rule one of IAE: Hide your wallet, delete all credit card information from your browser's auto-fill.

There'll be a page with the schedule posted on the RSI site, at the time of the change-over it will update with the changes.
Should be at New Babbage again this year (so might want to log there the day before.)
The manufacturers are staggered, so even though a new one starts each day, the previous one will still be available for another day.

no need to buy anything just enjoy the ride and try out some new ships. you can always buy ships in game.
Which is certainly the best advice...

Everything will be available to acquire in-game at some stage. Newly released ships may take a few months, but they will eventually arrive to purchase with aUEC.

I'm interested to see what (if any) referral bonus will be on offer for the event, as well as whether there are any decent discount starter packs, as this can be a good, cheap way to get 2 ships for the price of one (after a 30 day delay) and over time can help to afford a larger ship...

While much of this is personal preference/intended usage/etc., I will point out that those 3 ships are all at quite different price tiers, basically $100 apart. MSR is $260, Phoneix is $350, and 600iE is $475. So I think your budget would factor in greatly on that one. Also, if you're NOT planning to follow the Rule One advice and are instead going to spend spend spend on building a fleet, then use this tool to maximize your CCU chains!

IAE is also less about 'deals' and more about access to limited/time-restricted ships.
Though, sometimes when there are Starter Ships or 'bikes' added during IAE there'll be additional discounts on them in addition to Warbond. Also, if they announce a new Concept Ship during an IAE that is typically the cheapest it'll ever be and will be LTI.

Quality advice, thank you all. I will throw the wallet away for the event I think. I am tempted to buy but patience is a virtue.
I just hope you have better "willpower" (or is that "won't power") that I did/do: I went into my first IAE last year with no intention of buying anything, but the RAFT they released that year called me too strongly... I'm now more than half-way to what I have seen labelled as the "Gold Suit of Immediate Hostility".

Hehe.. I may break, I am eyeballing the 600i but also keeping the MSR on a hook like i friendzoned it.

It is, and for the record they normally reappear next year, so you get an idea this year and you know what you want to buy next year.

Or not. The nice thing is, if you find something that can't wait, then OK. You can always melt it and use the store credit to buy other things, then you can also buy it back when or even if you want. I have a few things that have been in and out of my inventory that way.

I'd suggest taking each out for a free 2 day rental at the event, bearing in mind that the 600i will be getting an internal rework in the (hopefully near) future, to see how you find flying\navigating\using them.

I like the 600i (melted mine a day or 2 ago to ensure I had funds for 2 of the f5 wars), and could tolerate the MSR when I tried it, but feel there's too much wasted space with the "secret" passages gimmick, the internal layout seemed "wrong" (looking at you, "server room") and the long tunnel to the cockpit was annoying to me, as was the lift between cargo area and main portion of the ship. Others like the MSR and have issues with the 600i.

If you're certain you like the game and are happy (and financially stable enough) to contribute more towards the development, but aren't certain whether you want to pay such a large amount now for either, grabbing a small CCU for either (or both) might be an option, and you can later either add more links towards it, or (particularly if a WarBond CCU) you may be able to sell\trade it with someone should you change your mind - I'm not recommending going down (or not going down) this path, merely mentioning that it is an option.

What are you hoping to get?
Ideally a Pioneer, then melting it 24 hours later so that I can reuse the funds to try for a Constellation Phoenix - Either would be nice, both would be better :)

One day I may consider a Kraken, but I don't know how well a ship that size would work with NPCs, blades, and myself - even the BMM I am building a CCU chain for may turn out to be unsuitable, but I'm hoping it's possible to land it at a settlement somewhere, then use it to store\sell loot I find doing other things, to help cover the costs to operate it. A Hull E also sounds nice, but I'm not sure how much fun there would be continually running between stations, with no planetfall, as a solo, which is why I am currently passing on it (That and I need to "invest" funds to upgrade 2 STV's into a Scorpius and an MSR prior to the BIS day to get the full set of free skins, so won't have the credit balance available for one).

if the 600ie gets a rework i'm going to end up having to put more money back in the game to rebuy mine lol. I'm a sucker for origin. god help me if they ever make an origin capital war ship............ my credit card will not see the light of day once again.

Back during another event I wrote bit of a guide about Warbond CCUs and how to extract extremely heavy discounts with them over a long period of time by cultivating CCU chains.
It'll take several events, so a couple of years, to really get extreme results, but even one event can give you some pretty great starts.
Also, seeing how the previous event played out might give you some hints on how this event is going to go.

Here's the package:
TL;DR: It's Valkyrie today. (20th)

Long version:

Alright, so it's the first day of Invictus, and the first warbond CCU of the event is out. All the veteran wallet warriors probably know how that deal works already, but since the glorious expansion of our Aurora fleet has not ceased this year either, I'll explain it briefly.

So, as even our new members might already know, a Warbond price is a fresh-money discount. Usually, you have to buy a whole ship at once to get it, and the discount is usually just like $10-$20. So if you were to buy a $120 ship with a warbond discount, it'd likely be $110 or $100. So you'd need to drop a hundred dollars of fresh money to get that $10-20 discount. But with warbond CCUs, you can get that same $10-20 discount, but with only $5-$10 fresh money. Then the rest can be store credit or even just a plan to buy the missing part of the CCU chain at a later date (though in that case you're obviously not going to be flying the ship).

So, a more concrete example, today we have Valkyrie on offer. Now, I've not yet checked how much the discount is, so I'll talk you, dear reader, through the process of figuring that out.
1. Go to https://robertsspaceindustries.com/pledge
2. On the "From" side, change the radiobutton selection to "All ships"
3. I like to pick Aurora ES, since it's the cheapest, I'll see all the current offers. Once you select Aurora ES, you'll get a list of currently possible CCUs from Aurora ES on the right.
4. You can easily find warbond CCUs by just scrolling through the list until you see a text "2 options available," like it says on Valkyrie at the moment.
5. Select Valkyrie.
6. Select "Warbond Edition"
7. Now, you don't want to buy an Aurora ES to Valkyrie CCU. That'd be a bit pointless. I mean, you might as well buy a whole Valkyrie at that point. But you can click the X on the Aurora ES to remove it. This changes the list on the left so, that it now ends at the last ship you can CCU from. So just scroll all the way down.
8. The last one is Starfarer Gemini, and upon selecting it, the price gets updated to $10 (+ tax.) So with quick mental math, we're buying a $35 CCU from Gemini to Valkyrie for $10, saving $25.

So, why do you want to do it like this, and not just buy the standalone Valkyrie and save $25 anyhow? Well, there will be more warbond CCUs coming every other day during Invictus, so if you were to get, say, a Warbond CCU to redeemer later, you can then buy the missing CCU from Redeemer to Gemini and combine those two warbond CCU discounts for more savings greater than just that $25 you can currently get.
And maybe you don't want a Valkyrie, that's alright, maybe you actually want a Redeemer. Then you just need to wait for redeemer to come back on sale (since Invictus is more Military orientated, you might need to wait for IAE in the winter) and you can get a CCU from Valkyrie to Redeemer.

Couple things to note:
1. If you apply your CCUs and later melt the whole thing, you only get the pledge you started your CCU chain from in your buybacks, you don't get the CCUs in your buybacks, those are gone. So if you're trying to get something like a -75% discount chain, that's gonna take a good long while and that money is tied to the CCUs you can't apply on the interim. If you just want some nice -25% to maybe at most -50% discount, that you might manage to get that during a single event. Depends on luck and the target ship. But if you're going for reclaimer, for example, well it doesn't have its functionality in game anyhow, so you're not really losing anything. And if you got even loftier targets, like BMM, well, that's not even flyable yet.
2. I said couple... I'm sure I had a second one. I just started thinking of BMM and got sidetracked. Ah well.
Okey, screw the numbering, I'm going to crash this thread like an Aurora.
So if you melt an applied CCU chain, you're going to get the amount you paid back as store credits, you're not losing money. Though you're not getting the tax back, so it might seem like it's less, but since you don't pay tax on store credit purchase (or the store credit portion of a mixed purchase), it's +/- 0. As it should be.

So, what's the end goal here? However much you want to optimize. I've managed to cultivate chains like
Aurora LN (Game package) -> Avenger -> 315p -> Nomad -> Hull B (melt value $90 at that point, it's where that CCU chain is currently applied at) -> Razor (+$5) -> Taurus (+$5, that is $40 discount as the ship went up in price) -> Hurricane (+$5) -> Corsair (+$5, warbond $15 discount) -> Santokyai (+$5) -> Mercury (+$5, $35 discount from warbond and concept to flyable) -> Harbinger (+$10, $20 warbond discount) -> Caterpillar (+$5, $35 pre-announced price bump discount) -> Gemini (+$10) -> Banu Merchantman (+$10, $200 'I waited for so long for this' discount)

So in the end, the BMM will have melt value of $155. Not bad for a $550 (currently) ship. Honestly, I've kinda enjoyed cultivating that CCU chain, it's a bit like growing a Bonsai. Takes years, and every year it is a bit more how you like it. Well, that's not for everyone. But I hope this helps you maybe grab a 25-50% discount during this Invictus. A weeks worth of patience, that's doable for anyone, right?

Oh, how should you spend the money you save? Buy another ship, of course. I'm not doing this to back less, I'm doing this to get more :like:

The main points:
- If you buy a warbond CCU from, say, 315p to Nomad for $10 discount (new money), you use store credit to speculate on SRV and buy a normal CCU from Razor to SRV for $5, and you then get another WB CCU from Constellation Taurus to Terrapin at $25 discount. You could fill in the gaps and get to terrapin immediately at $35 combined discount, forsaking the SRV speculation. Or you could wait till SRV is flyable and goes up in price, say, $10. So now you could fill in the gaps and get to terrapin for $45 combined discount. Or you could wait for another event, and also get a WB CCU from 350r to Hull B for $10 discount, which just fits under the Razor to SRV CCU you already have (needs a $5 difference to buy the CCU from Hull B to Razor) and maybe like a WB CCU from Cutlass Blue to Constellation for $10 discount (it's quite lucky to get a WB offer to a ship you got another WB offer chained from, but it can happen. And the more WB CCUs you gather, the likelier it is to happen.) So you could then get a total of $65 discount on Terrapin.
- The gaps in your WB CCU chain can be filled using store credit during a sale event (or outside of sales if the ships you're CCUing FROM are permanently available).
- You can get store credit from melting WB CCUs that become irrelevant (so if for example you bet on the SRV going up in price $10 when it becomes flyable, but CIG turned SRV into an absolute monster and increased the price of SRV by $50 instead, so now you can't use the Constellation to Terrapin CCU. I mean, you're getting a much better discount there so it's a jackpot.)
- You need a lot of patience. If you want the maximal benefit, you may need to sit on a pile of CCUs for years without applying them.
- Make the CCU chains from smallest possible increases. This way you got better chances to combine more discounts later on.

I was planning on contributing to a thread like that for IAE in the same way that I did with your Invictus one... Were you planning to do another for IAE, or should I start one (I'll be about 10 hours late to update for the alien day, which was why I hadn't created one already)?

I was planning on doing another one yeah, and I'm looking forward to your contributions as well. :like:

I mean, if you want to start one I'd be more than happy to contribute there instead of course. Doesn't really matter who does the thread, as long as there is one so new members (and old ones) get a heads up and we can make a record for later.
