Gaming Monitor

Well, my monitor crapped out the other day. The screen started tearing and the speakers were squeaking like crazy.

I'm looking for a new monitor, to be used for gaming and youtube watching. I'd like it to be at least 1080p, and a good set of built in speakers would be a plus. My budget is around 300$, though I really hope I won't have to spend that much.

What do you guys think would be a good monitor? Is that budget total crap for what I'd like?

You can definitely get a good monitor in that price range. I picked up a 24" Acer 144hz 1080p monitor that lists for $299 on Newegg.com.

I scored it for $190 on Black Friday - shop around and you can find deals.

The cheapest G-Sync 144Hz refresh rate monitor that you will find that Nvidia supports from their website. If you don't care about a really good monitor then you could just go with a monitor without G-Sync but still a decent refresh rate http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313 .

I picked up an Asus VG248 from Newegg a few weeks back - unlucky it happened right after Black Friday, but there should still be some good deals out there.

The speakers work, not great though.

So you'll have to buy speakers, but this option is larger than all these 24" suggestions.

Samsung Syncmaster S27B350 (Tiger Direct - $220 - this is super cheap/maybe a flash sale) (Amazon - $273)

I've had one for almost 4 years and it's amazing. Yes it's 27" and 1080p, but honestly I would never go back to anything smaller. 1080p works perfect at this size, though anything about 27" I would highly recommend 1440p.

I have a 280X, so G-Sync doesn't matter to me. I was actually looking at the VG248, but I'd like to see what else is out there in that price range.

My original monitor was an HP w1907, 60Hz, 1440x900. It just hit 8 years old when it broke. The speakers were amazing on that thing.

If you want to save that monitor and you have time on your hands I'd suggest you save the monitor.

If you don't have time to spend soldering, then just scavenge the parts and toss it. You've probably already have seen this post on OCN http://www.overclock.net/t/1420366/i-have-a-problem-with-vg248-by-asus-refresh-rate but that's just informational. Seriously if you want great sound quality and a great picture why not invest in an awesome audio system separated from the display and get a display port monitor with a high refresh rate?

That's true, I could just buy the speakers separate. Honestly, it's a small monitor, and I wanted to upgrade to something a bit bigger. This just gave my cheap side an excuse to spend money. I'm upgrading my motherboard anyway, I'll take a look at that monitor repair video, thanks. I may repair it just to sell, I want something bigger.

The problem with mainboard repair is that you have a multi-layered PCB and you run the risk of melting/burning parts of the layers together ultimately destroying the board beyond repair. The video is about motherboard from a personal desktop repair, however the methodologies stay the same.

I'd would just look at this link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/top-rated/electronics/1292115011 and pick one out while listening to youtube clips of people using those monitors and pick the one best that you like.

I would never try to repair a motherboard, it's really not worth the hassle. I meant the monitor.
