Is having many ships really useful ?

wasn't clearly said yet in this thread; but one benefit of owning multiple ship packages (not stand alone ships) is the multiple avatars you will receive. This has been mentioned in 10FTC and it will allow one to have that by the book character who does his military time in squadron 42 while also allowing one that skips the citizen route and becomes a dredge to society.... Not clear if these avatars can be turned into hire able NPCs but it was hinted....

I personally own more than one because some of the industrial ships have very good synergy. Such as the Reclaimer -> Crucible -> Endeavor.
Also, as others have stated, I have little time available and would rather do what I like in game when I please rather than grind for money to buy a ship. I'd prefer to upgrade ships or equipment than spend on new ships.
