if your looking to upgrade i think a price range would be nice so we could suggest build options for you.

I am looking for something in the $500 price range.
I asked in /r/buildapc and already had someone give me a pretty looking table with stuff (which only looks pretty on reddit apparently).

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($218.50 @ shopRBC)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($83.98 @ Newegg Canada)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($35.67 @ DirectCanada)
Video Card: Sapphire Radeon R9 280X 3GB Vapor-X Video Card ($266.00 @ Vuugo)

That looks like a decent entry level system. I'm sure our tech gurus will have more specific recommendations, though, so you may wish to hold off before buying anything.

500 is doable but its not going to be the prettiest thing come launch. You are going to want more than 4gb ram thats for sure. Id go with AMD instead. like an 8xxx something or rather. they are a lot cheaper than intel and you can overclock them pretty easily (some come overclocked)

This next part is crucial.
That build ran you 600 but that didnt include power, case, wifi receiver (if no Ethernet), hard drive, disc drives, or extra cooling if applicable. I wouldn't salvage any of this off of your old rig except one of the drives (maybe). The underlying stuff can run you anywhere from an extra $150 to $300 for essentials. Personally I spent $400 just on improving my god damn wireless connection.
Damn that was a lot of typing for me. I need a Beer.

Looking over your motherboard you cant really upgrade the cpu without breaking the bank for an old cpu, but you can pick up more ram, your board will take up to 16GB. You can get a new graphics card, I recommend a evga gtx 960 ssc they cost about $200 and run full settings for SC if the other hardware permits.

RAM: You can actually put two of these kits in if you wanted to add the second one latter (always best to match sets)

Bigby hit the nail on the head.

600 for your core is going to get you a decent core, but you're looking at at least another couple hundred to actually have a computer. I've used the same ATX case for 10 years now, but everything (including fans) else has been replaced.

500 for your total budget isn't going to get you very far sadly. What I would recommend you do at this point, is up your RAM to at least 8 gigs, 16 if you can, and upgrade your GPU to something at least on par with a GTX 7xx.

That'll run you a couple hundred, but it should get you through most of the alpha/beta while you save up to completely replace your current system for launch.

Heres a handy little tool to help when picking parts when unsure :)

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+7970+/+R9+280X

and for that build I would only swap out the card for the gtx 960 and at least double the ram, otherwise pretty nice

Yeah thats what I was recommending it would be around $300 for him to get a 960 and 16 gigs of ram. I think that would do him for a while

Case wise, I strongly suggest (in order fav > still fav but not as fav) case labs, Fractal Design, Corsair, NZXT. They can get a bit pricey though, but they're pretty solid. Case labs cases live forever and have awesome options/adaptability.
Guts wise, going to list my top brands for each section, mobile so can't link.
Mobo (matx/atx): Asus, evga, msi. mATX can save you money
RAM: Doesn't matter really, 8gb minimum
CPU: Intel. AMD can save a good chunk of cash though.
GPU (Nvidia.): EVGA, Asus. GTX 9xx series, wait for sales.
GPU (AMD): XFX, only brand I have experience with. The 390x is rumored to be out late this year last I read.
PSU: Corsair, evga, Fractal Design. Modular makes life easier. 80plus certs are nice.
Fans: Noctua. Seriously, best dang fans. Corsair is a close second.

But seriously, hold off on most things till sale season. New cards are rumored to be popping out in Q3 and Q4, holiday sales are really good at chopping prices. If you need "Now" stuff, GPU will give the most immediate bonus, RAM is pretty inexpensive to upgrade and I'm one of those who always just maxes out the board every time because it's cheap.

266 bucks for 280x is a crime!
Basically, you always want your memory and power supply new. But search for a bargain motherboard and GPU in the 2cond hand market. When its time to upgrade CPU, you'll probably do a major full system upgrade, so it might be worth not to cut corners there. 4460 is absolutely the best choice for the budget atm (188 bucks on amazon)

Wouldn't surprise me to find 280x in good condition for 140 bucks. For 190-200 bucks you'll find a second hand 290 which packs a lot more punch. Ive bought gtx 770 twin fozr for about 200, and that was roughly 14 month ago. In a year it will probably be worthless.

However, i do think that now is a great time to upgrade. In the next 12-18 month we'll be getting VR, gsync/freesync, layered memory GPU's, star citizen will be closing to release etc For the first 6 month, everything will be crazy expensive and most consumers will be dumping only current generation tech. Then the prices will start to drop slowly, you'll start finding great deals. By that time, you've been using your current build for +- 2 <-> 2.5 years, time for an upgrade, jumping 2-3 generations, just in time for smooth FPS in PU (in VR)

It seems like the best way is to simply wait until Black Friday, and spend less money on more powerful system. Plus I'll probably even have more money to spend...
Expect me to call you all back here in about 6 months :D

Change of plans :D
I will try finding a number of different parts that I want, and hunting for sales on said items. So I am planning to find 3-5 Motherboards, CPUs, GPUs, and so on. Then I'll be on the lookout for good sales for them, as black friday isnt guaranteed to make things go on sale. If the item is good, and not 5 years old, it is less likely to go on sale on black friday, since its being bought at a good rate anyways.

Who here can run the game at good to excellent quality? I was wondering if you have benchmarks for your rig, so I know what to aim for when finding parts that fit?
