Hi all. I'm making a build for a new rig but I'm getting some conflicting information on a choice of CPU.

I've seen some say the 7950x3d but I've seen some say the 7800xed. Of course there's some saying go for the powerhouse i9 14900k. I'm pretty much set on tbe rest of the rig but this one component is stalling me.

Any advice?
Thanks

Without making the decision for you I'd break down the key perks of each thusly:
i14900k - fastest single core speeds
7950x3d - most cores/threads
7800x3d - most efficient, in terms of both dollars and watts for the performance. I guess I'd probably vote this one 'all around,' unless you have a specific NEED for either the higher core count or that 6Ghz (@250W!).

I am sitting at the screen looking at this build:
Intel Core i9 14900K
Z790 Tomahawk 6E board
Kingston FURY Beast RGB DDR5 5600MHz
2TB Samsung 990 Pro PCIE Gen 4 NVMe M.2 SSD
ASUS TUF Gaming Radeon RX 7900 XTX OC
1000W - Corsair RM1000e

I've seen a lot of sites talking about different cpu's but I admit I do not know all that much about them. Sometimes i say yes that one but then i read someone who says the other. i was going to get the 7950x3d but it is out of stock.

Personally, my best suggestion is to look up comparison vids between the top CPUs that you're interested in, once you've chosen that, repeat for the motherboard for obvious reasons if you end up going with AMD since you've got your eye on a good board for Intel already. As it's "Black Friday", now is a good time to shop, but some recent years have also had sales the following Monday called "Cyber Monday" which also might help is some cost savings. Either way, I wish you as much fun getting the parts, assembling the parts & everything that you do with your new system afterwards.

I've assembled my new rig this summer so I can provide "fresh" feedback on a choice.
First of all keep in mind that the choice should be based on your expected use case: what is good for me o other may not be the best for you.

i14900k has the highest single core clock but from some reviews I've seen the mix of P-core and E-core in some user case cause some problem with process assigned to the wrong core-type with the consequences of loosing performance. In addition, but this is sorta of a personal taste, Intel require you an extra tax to be able to overclock your CPU and have the tendency to dump the socket at every generation refresh.

7950x3d is the best AMC cpu... on paper and it actually is on normal multi-treading application... on the other hand when used for gaming that CPU shows some issue.
AMD is using a ciplet configuration and this CPU is composed by 2 ciplet: one with the associated 3D v-cache, and one without it.
Keep in mind that these are almost 6 month old reference and you should search for more fresh data, but for the benchmark I've looked for when used with application that take advantage of the v-cache thare are issue assigning process to the correct ciplet with a significant drop in performance and bringing the 7950x3D to a performance level of a 7800x3D a significant less expensive CPU.
For my build I've opted for the less expensive 7800x3D.

Some of consideration on AMD CPU based on my experience.
First I've notice that after installing the Ryzen master application and setted to the auto-overclock fan ramp up less, meaning there is a better thermal/power use while I haven't notice any performance drop.
Second consideration is that AMD CPU are design to bump up performance until they reach 70-80° so either a good AIO or a beefy air cooler is needed (and there is none in the 7800x3D box.
Finally AMD CPU allow you more freedom on the motherboard platform you'll like to use: you can opt for a DDR4 -base MB and save some cash or got for a DDR5 one and, according to ADM statement, have the chance to use the same system event with the future CPU family since it should retain the same socket, basically halving the setup price.

Thank you for the detailed reply. Theres a bit in there for me to think over. I still have the build made up but I will eat and mull it over.

It's not going to break the bank at all but I dislike making big decisions without study and I would have pulled the trigger already had they not sold out of my desired cpu.

I will likely be going with the original posted build and will update components along the way of they are falling behind.

Thank you chief. I will eat and make the purchase once I've thought it over for an hour. Hopefully I make the right choice and will improve gameplay for all titles I play.

That's my first choice but they seem to be sold pit in many places. I can get a build elsewhere with the 7950x3d but the rest of the build is a little disappointing.

I'm always happy to help my fellow TESTies however I can while hoping that things both work out for them as well as that they have a wonderful time. I know, sometimes I'm so selfish, huh? LoL

My first gaming PC build, I went Intel i9 9900K and Nvidia 2080Ti.
My second PC build, I went AMD R9 39xx and RX 7900 xtx.

Honestly, I liked the i9 build better - most things I do on the PC are single core, games, streaming. While I'm sure I will lose performance with Video Editing, 3D rendering - I just don't use the 16 cores.

A few suggestions and observations:
  1. I run an open case - never an issue. The RX 7900 is sitting idol (fans are not moving) and here I am on there, watching YT and Twitch. It says it 32*c outside, my AC is upstairs. The AMD build seems more efficient.
  2. NZXT 3 fan cooler - it was the simplest to install (unlike the Corsair for the i9) - I would buy again, it's quiet.
See Pic of my build. If I had a choice - i9 (even the basic one)

Ps:
Please excuse the office chair, it's the most comfortable :like:

I'm running the 13900KS with a MSI 3 fan AIO, a MSI Suprim 4090 AIO cooled video card with video quality set to max quality and 64gb of the fastest ram the MSI motherboard could handle. Even in the laggiest city areas I have never seen my FPS drop below 25. Normally, in New Babbage and Area 18 I get in the 50-60fps range running around. Frequently get triple digits in space.

Ooh that looks comfy.

Little boys buy RGB gaming chairs, men buy executive office chairs.
Surprisingly I found the chair at Harvey Norman, it's not listed on the website. It had the perfect Arm Adjustments (extra high) and I'm sitting in it for hours :D The Computer and Gaming desk has enough lights on it, it's like my Second Christmas tree :like:

So, from what I have read about the Vulkan graphics system, it can, in software, run multiple video cards in an almost SLI like system. But, unlike SLI, you can mix and match, so you could literally use your CPU's built in GPU and an external GPU and it would work. I might almost be willing to throw in a second 4090 AIO cooled video card if that is actually true. DX12 also has a similar system.

The DX12 system however has to have the game programmer actually program the SLT functionality into the game. It's a big job, so so far almost no games support the DX12 native SLI. So it's effectively useless.

I would be interested to know if the vulkan GPU scaling is native to the driver or if it is again something that would need to be manually programmed in and thus will probably not take off.
