Ok testies... its been awhile since I have done anything with my computer... so the plan is to maybe get another video card and give my gtx1080 to my son. Question is, will I use all the power of the 3080 or 3090? They are supposed to be available Sept 17.

Here is my load out
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz, 3696 Mhz, 6 Core(s), 12 Logical Processor(s)
BaseBoard Product ROG MAXIMUS X HERO (WI-FI AC)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 64.0 GB
GTX 1080
Samsung U28E590D 28-Inch 4K UHD LED-Lit

Will the CPU and Monitor deliver the results for a 3080 or 90?

Note: I use this PC for work as well - virtual machines (hence the memory) and camtasia for customer videos.

Let me know your thoughts?

Yes.

If you do anything in Star Citizen, that card will be getting used as intended!
Thanks Montoya. My monitor is only 60 hz (works great with my 1080)... will my monitor need to be upgraded as well... bang for the buck type of thing? I know the performance of the gpu is only as good as the slowest part in the configuration.

You have the same issue I have. My monitor is 60hz! 😆

We need to upgrade our monitors!

Yes!

If you do video editing, any 3D program including 2D/3d CAD, any other graphic application or enjoy your self play games like SC that are graphic heavy.

CHEERS! 🍻

Side note: Yeah new monitor don't hurt either, but what you got will do fine to start with.

Do you have a modular power supply you can get the appropriate cables for the 3080/3090?
As far as know... the power supply is something like 800... it works for my 1080... shouldn't it work for a 3080? This is the type of stuff I am trying to determine.

The 3080 will have a 8 pin to 12 pin PSU adapter. So if you have 2x 4 Pin or 1x 8 pin you should be fine.
If you have a modular PSU you might be able to buy a dedicated adapter cable later on.

Power consumption of the 3000 series is drastically highter. (320W for the 3080)
According to NVIDIA a 750W should be fine. (unless you want to do some crazy overclocking)

Mainboard: PCIe 3.0 x16 slot is enough.
CPU: I guess it should be fine for most games
RAM: 4x than you will need ^^

Card should be a dual slot (3090 is 3x slot) so i assume that you have enough space in your case.

If you can wait a little longer i would wait for actual benchmarks and AIB cards. If you can wait even more look what AMD has in pipeline. Also i don't really expect them to compete with the 3080.

Maybe there will be a 3080 super (?)

Just remember that SC performance currently is dependent on a lot of unoptimized code and networking, so you might not see the increase in performance you expect just yet. But it will be well worth it in the long run imo. Also as others said, upgrade the monitor for more hertzy goodness when you can. Otherwise you should be good to go.
