Hmm if that is a realistic immage of the proportions those whale are going to be huge. Very huge considering that to get there you need to use a ship, and that mean LANDING on them.

I'll expect a whale protection association ban TEST pilot to Crusader after they kill some whales while ttempitng to land on them...

OR the Devs at CIG might program the space whales to attempt to "mount" any ship that opens fire or rams them.

I'm sure they'll figure some way to do it that isn't just one box at a time because that's boring as hell to do in some of the bigger hauling ships. Imagine putting 1SCU at a time into a cargo container and then doing it a thousand times to load up a Hull. There's a reason modern age shipping is done with thousands of people loading and unloading trucks. It's a massive industry.
Most shipping is done with huge C containers that huge gantries lift off ships and put onto trains and trucks. When the container reaches it's destination usually a single unloader will empty it.

I'd be happy to see ships with installed tractor beams simply snap all cargo to grid in no time, and ships without need to laboriously move one piece at a time. There would be a rush to add tractor beams but that would not be a bad thing for a dedicated cargo hauler. A humble 315P ought to load faster than a 325A, given the former has a tractor instead of a weapon on the nose. It would be good to see more flexibility who could add tractors where on what ships. The Carrack needs a tractor.

The cargo box size is also going to factor into it. Same with ramps/cargo lifts. Tractor beams would mostly be effective when moving cargo in zero-G but I am not sure their usefulness when planetside or on a cargo pad that should have dedicated cargo movers. Then you have ships like the Argo SRV which is shown moving around large cargo boxes and is even mentioned in its Q&A that it's a perfect use for moving around large cargo containers for ships like the Hull series. This seems to imply we can expect to see lots of NPC-controlled SRV's actively loading and unloading Hulls at major trading hubs.

i think the Argo SRV will be the medium solution for moving cargo, working on the same concept idea of tractorbeam-forklifter ship I'll like to see a smaller one specifically design for that role, instead of the Argo SRV that could use also for that...

beyond that, the only other document is a very old Design doc they posted back in April of 2015

I fully expect to see forklifts and other means of moving cargo around both by the player and by NPC's. After all, they introduced the trolly cart and cargo lifts to bring cargo to one's hanger. The other thing to remember is they fully expect cargo to take time to load and unload and that is factored into the economic earning potential.

Hey I just realized I own an SRV. I guess that makes me a longshoreman... no wait, this is spaceships... longspacestationguy?

So you are saying we might not be able to offload our cargo because the local union is striking about the unhealthy working conditions of Hurston?
Damn right. They’re also upset Hurston isn’t providing them with their 6 donut a day daily ration and 5 smoke breaks an hour standard.

Also….somebody told me Space Hoffa is buried in an asteroid somewhere in M1C-L1.

Oh-oh... that's what that squishy stuff was that I tried to mine close to MIC-L1 the other day . Then my mining laser up and quit, saying I didn't pay enough. It cost me 108,000 aUEC, the price of 3 mining attachments, and an extra coffee break to get the dam thing working again.

Two questions come to mind:
  • I wonder if tractor beams from multiple ships can be combined to tow heavy objects
  • I wonder if large (5-10km) asteroids or small space stations are anchored.

Kinetic Bombardment, anyone?

Yes, tractor beams from multiple ships can be combined. It was covered in the Q&A of the SRV.
Small space stations are not physical objects so can't be moved. As of the moment, asteroids are also not physicalized objects and so cant be moved but that might change in the future.

I'm pretty sure that space Hoffa was buried inside the rock walls of Grim Hex during it's latest upgrades, because at this point, the actual culprit would be just as identifiable as anybody else that has visited that lawless location, should he ever he discovered in the future.
