Is this really a new quarterly patch or is it just the continuation of the 3.20 patch. Meaning its 3.20.1?

Dunno bit it says 3.21.0 rather than 3.20.1 so it does seem a new patch?

If I understand it right, then it is - at the moment - 3.20.1, but because they want to merge the Replication Layer into it at a later time, they chose to name it 3.21.0 instead, so that the replication layer arrives with 3.21.x and not 3.20.x.

then why not delay 3.21.0 and release a version with the number 3.21.0 when the replication layer arrives? 3.21 isn't even on the roadmap yet.

it's yet another brainfart from CIG.

EDIT: Spectrum post here. From what I gather, they put 3.21 on the PTU and not 3.20.1 because they are changing the way features are put into the PTU and Live builds. I'm guessing Live servers will probably get 3.20.1 soon, and the replication layer will come with 3.21.0.

I think they forked the development branch at a point where they intend to merge the replication layer but instead of just doing it and giving everyone a very buggy new 3.21 PTU version, they are going to give us two PTU variants, pure 3.21.0 where they can see what issues are related to non-replication-layer code and then 3.21.0 + replication layer. That way everyone can test both and it is easier for them to discern which problems come from the replication layer and which don't. Once they are reasonably sure the mess won't be too big they'll merge it into 3.21.x, while urgent fixes to 3.21.0 may appear in 3.21.y beforehand. At least that is what I believe the reasoning is. We'll see next week I guess.

Short version is that this is concurrent development. They want a lot of time and interaction on the server meshing, and it sounds like this might be running alongside Live until whenever.

I am kind of surprised they are not using a system like that already, seems like most MMOs already do. If they are, in fact, running the game on the servers and the info is being "live streamed" to us as we play, no wonder the game is laggy and buggy (server wise).
