Great stuff from Boredgamer. Worth everyone's time to understand in detail, even if you are not a scan specialist. Certainly it is obvious they are making the scan officer position a vital and exciting part of all multi-crew ships. This is going to turn SC into a thinking person's game, with all manner of method to outfox your opponents or be outfoxed yourself.

I feel like this video is a great way to tell the star citizen community to calm their tits about the whole golf-swing thing. Its just a roughed in mechanic designed to test the functionality of their scanner tech. I also liked how the differences between scan-types were explained. The whole thing makes a lot more sense now.

Cheers!

Well i can live with the golf swing as a low result loaner scanning option. Als i'm not sure that it is just a "roughed in mechanic designed".
But when it comes to specialized and advanced scanning i want to see something more difficult. Something a guy has to do while sitting in his Hornet Tracker, trying to keep a low profile.

The talk about scanning was kind of exciting. Thinking about the player being scan able. That is where search and rescue will start to be part of the game. I one of us gets stranded in space others can come and try to find them. Also it being able to beat a scan will be cool. Right now even when your ship is turned off and on the other side of an object you show up on radar.

What the hell is this golf swing everyone is talking about?
Can't find a good animated gif that shows it. It is the UI that originally showed up in golf games that use a button press.

Example plus possible implementation:
  1. Click/tap once to start the bar moving to the desired power level.
  2. Click/tap when it gets to the correct level. Often a failure if you go past 100% in the scanning case this is where you end up making a bunch of EM noise and give your location away.
  3. Click/tap a 3rd time when you get to the "sweet spot" at the bottom. Again a penalty of some sort occurs based on distance from the optimal point. They didn't really give what would happen in this case it could be the same as going past the top or it might have to do with how good the return signal is processed.

Best written description i have read so far ☺
Also visible at around 00:30 in the above video
also i hope they are doing some kind of random time for the swing, so at least it is not to easy to just setup a plain stupid macro button which you just press for perfect result.
