I just was informed that the Gemini also comes with the refinery module, thus can be used as a "normal" Beerfarer for refining fuel. BUT has better shields, better weapons, better structure; lacks of manouverabilty and cargo capacity.

Now, from a serious point of view - keeping in mind that I'm NOT into combat operations - would it make sense for me to upgrade the Starfarer to a Starfarer Gemini...?

Not straight forward since the game is far from balanced. I would just get the CCU and wait. Anyways why would you want the military version, well for me it would be if I was jumped by pirates, would I survive in either case. Since all big ships have blind spots at the moment I have my doubts but as said balance is a long way off.

here's nowhere in the verse that the Starfarer won't be a sitting duck to pirates and whatever comes along. So if you don't have a constant escort or aren't part of a fleet that has fighters to protect you, you should take the Gemini option, especially of you can get it LTI right now.

Thanks for the suggestion. Thats the point why I'm thinking about CCU my farer. But: is there a difference when being attacked in space? Is the chance for a Gemini of surviving an attack so much higher? Well yes, perhaps, looking to the new speed table...but if the only option is to run away, a "regular" Starfarer could also do this, right? Hm.......

^ Genius idea.

I was watching videos, and the guns on the civilian Starfarer seemed just as powerful as the military version...but again, with all the rebalancing that is going to take place, who knows what will finally happen? I would just get the CCU and (resist applying it, and) wait.

BTW, in the CitizenCon vid's, on Saturday, Dad Lando talked about how when he had the Starfarer fully crewed, it pretty much could take on anything. I think that (along with making sure all the guns are upgraded) is also an important consideration for survivability.

get the CCU and wait (like other suggested). My thoughts are, if you are not going to go into combat, you don't need the combat stuff...especially if all you are doing is hauling fuel. However, there are a number of extras (bigger power plant, bigger engines, bigger max shield. In exchange, you lose 1/3 of your cargo capacity. If you think you MIGHT get into a situation where you are hauling fuel for a combat convoy, you might want that extra protection.

One thing to remember is you will need to swap the missile pod out if you want to mine gas "The Gemini also includes an optional missile pod, which can be swapped for the fuel intake unit on the ship’s nose (see below for details.) Missile pods can be mounted to either Starfarer variant."

I only bought the CCU and wait for things to become. If in doubt I melt the CCU; nothing lost.

I had the standard Starfarer, but I upgraded it to the Gemini for the improved survivability. Profits will come second to supporting the fleet.

My thoughts would be this...what ship makes you the money to buy the other ship in game?

Getting a Starfarer would get you a Gemini probably about 2x as fast as a Gemini getting your a standard (1/3-1/2 of your run is cost, rest profit to be shared) This cost would probably be the same on the Gemini as the standard, so the margin would be less. That means more runs on a Gemini to get the same money. Only thing a Gemini would is allow you to do combat support where the rewards might be high enough to offset of the reduction in cargo.
Just thinking out loud...

Yes I think it's worth it. Losing 1/3 cargo gives you much better survivability, and still leaves you with a lot of cargo space (as much as 48 Freelancers).

IMHO, if you expect to be in a combat situation, the Gemini is the better choice. If rather you intend to stay in UEE space, in the normal trade routes, seeking normal employ, the standard Starfarer is better since it hauls far more fuel. You will make money faster with it.

I believe they can both refine.
