I thought it was shelved for various reasons until a much later date?
I may have missed something but it was scheduled for Q2 of 2023. They also had images of it in jumpoint recently and teased it during IAE. I would not be surprised if they want to be sneaky and throw it out when no one is expecting it like they did the carrack.

There is a lot of talk of it being thrown to the back of the offices to collect dust.

If someone has a Liberator, you might be able to find a better way of moving things like that.
There are a lot of Liberators in TEST. There are a lot of whatever you need or need help with in TEST.
The issue is the size of the module and, for the Liberator if you can carry it as a ship/vehicle instead of as cargo. It appears to be larger than the XXS hangar.

It may be a problem there. I guess the point was, there is help in TEST. Just might need to be in Discord, and make noise that doesn't sound like a burp.

The Galaxy makes compromises that don't appear to make sense.
The weapons loadout is poorly thought out, specifically: Size 5 is anti-large ship, but it is clearly not a combat vessel so needs defensive turrets, which means size 4.

The module appears too large to easily transport.
It appears to be too wide to load into a Hercules, or fit in a Liberator's cargo area. . .

The competitors for the Galaxy appear to be the Caterpillar and the Retaliator, but both of those appear to fill the general purpose role better since they have multiple modules on the ship, giving you greater flexibility.
I have the same concern when I see twin S5s. I think they want to give it more than twin S4, and got lazy. Made sense before the 3.14 nerf but doesn’t anymore. I wish we’d see more quad S4s, and a triple S4 would be cool on a triangle shaped ship.

I’m not sure this has any direct competition. The Railen for cargo. The Apollo for medical, but that’s the same company. Nothing close for the refinery. The Odyssey is huge and the Lancer is tiny.

One thing that strikes me about the players is they virtually all want all the modules, but fact is most will fly just one and can buy the others in game. Why not just pick one and make it home when it arrives? It’s a great deal to get a Carrack for the next decade. I’m surprised people don’t just buy it for that.

The Retaliator and Caterpillar both are modular where you and 5 friends go out and do a variety of missions. The Cat is more cargo focused while the Tali is more combat focused than the Galaxy.
All three have cargo.
All three are supposed to have Medical.
All three have more modules enroute.

They aren't the same but they fill the same basic role.

After looking again at the Galaxy, the module is definitely larger than the XXS hangar. Therefore the module doesn't fit in a Herc, Liberator, or Caterpillar and is significantly larger than the boxes on the exterior of any of the Hull series.

How do you move the modules if you want to relocate your base?
Can a Kraken move it? That's alot of resources to tie up to change locations.

If that was the case then they would not be teasing it so much lately. it is definitely coming soon
Ya, they are giving a lot of mixed signals on this.
In the most recent IAE they talked about the fact that the Merchantman currently has a skeleton team working on the exterior the interior is white-boxed. But they said they are at a crossroads where they need to decide if it gets shelved or not. I think it's getting shelved and the increased attention to the tease is just marketing knowing it's an attention-grabbing ship shape and using it in their material.

I am not sure its so much got lazy as it is the other teams have not created all the weapons yet in game and we are just seeing the disconnect between what is currently available and what is in the design doc.

And you are right in that this ship currently has no direct real direct competition as of this moment due to its size.

This is a big concern and the other part is it will only be able to be modified at a large enough ship yard. Its the same thing they hinted at back years ago with some of the larger ship parts and weapons. In that you can transport them but to modify them will require the services of a ship yard and can't be done in the field. I wish we would get more information on how they expect the game loop on changing out these mods and transporting them will work.

The modules are implied to be easy to swap, not needing a shipyard. It isn't a refit. However that is a consideration.

Thanks for the info i didnt know that was put out for IAE. If they shelve it they are going to piss alot more people off. I feel like this is another Carrack type situation.

I couldn't really dump more money into the game at the moment, so I just ended up using some store credit to ccu to get the base ship.

I do wonder though what the experience is like if I decide to fly it without any module in it. Is it just empty, and I can't access the hangar? Or do we just get a large empty room like the cargo module, but without the cargo grid to secure stuff?

The Retaliator Base, without modules, has inaccessible void space where the modules would be, according to the Q&A. Given that, I wouldn't count on being able to traverse that space without a module.

Flying without a module is probably not a good idea, however it is, likely, to be one of the few ways to move modules to a new base of operations. Like moving inventory from Area 18 to Loreville, only a much bigger item that doesn't fit in anything we know about short of, maybe, a couple of the Capital ships. (The module appears to be bigger than an XXS pad.)

Worst case, could CIG simply spawn different variants of a ship we think has 'modules', carrying over equipment we have applied, causing us to believe that a module (not ship) was swapped?

As for swaps being easy, I hope that is right but I'm not counting on that. Star Citizen seems to aim for realistic in other areas, and this easily could be another one of them.

This is possible, but it is much easier from a programming perspective to change a property in the ship object model that says the module is A or B (and whatnot).

The module can even contain it's own inventory of other components if you do it that way, so for example if you change out a cargo module for a refinery module, it doesn't remove anything currently in the cargo module being swapped out. I doubt they would go that far though but they could, and have:
That's how backpacks work. Two identical backpacks are two instances of the same object, but they can have different contents. The content is saved with the backpack when you take it off, so when you put that backpack back on, it have the same inventory as when you stored it. It's' the easiest way, and also it keeps people from complaining.

I'm not saying they'll go that route, but that's how they SHOULD go.

I have a ccu in my buybacks for it, but after seeing the q&a, I think i will let it rot. it is not the ship for me.

After reading the Q&A, I can't help that think the Medical variant with an arrow in the hangar will be a fantastic general purpose ship. You 'could' park an ursa on the medical lift and use that to run missions, etc. Travel with a mobile spawn point and have an arrow to help defend.

For an all-purpose general ship, I think that could be a strong combination. I'll likely go the full hospital route. Having said, that ... I have all three modules with the 10 year insurance. I'm debating melting the two non-medical modules and earn them in-game.
