Perhaps the S1 scanners are for stealth scanning, where as the S3 will definitely catch the attention of large -> Cap ships? I honestly have no idea.

It's supposed to be a hardened exploration/scout vessel with the central scanner chair. I'm guessing the S3 is the big scanner for active use with the seat, the other two are just for regular flight ops.

For the longest time I was gonna get one because I really like the design, but I've never seen a definitive use for it. I would love a high-value cargo variant (think armored truck) instead of the scanner seat, that would make a lot more sense to me.

What I’m wondering about in particular is that CIG has always listed the Terrapin scan as S2, yet this source says S3. Perhaps it is directional, and reaches S3 range with an S2 slot, because it is not scanning all directions at once?

So I decided to check this viewer for the value of the Hornet Tracker turret. It is listed as S5, so I’m more confused than ever.

Who has actually used the Terrapin scan chair? Is it functioning and if so, what can you tell us about it?

As to multiple scanners, it makes sense that it can scan for EM and IR at S1 sensitivity, both at once. I’m curious if the big seat scan is really S3. That would make it by far the smallest S3 scanner, and of enhanced interest to me even if it only had that sensitivity across a narrow slice of sky. In fact, having to point the scanner would make interesting gameplay, and a reason for the seat.

The design of the chair hanging from right below the "'radar dome" in the middle with the space left empty around it always gave me the vibe that it was made to rotate, also indicating a directional scanner. It might not make much practical sense but it would look cool and make for more interesting gameplay.
I haven't flown one in years, as it's one of the most neglected and often buggy ships. Dunno how it's now.
As for the sizing differences I have no idea.
