This is great stuff. I would just offer a few additional observations about Vanduul ships.
They note the fighters, Driller, Void Bomber and Kingship, but there is another ship we’ve been promised—the Marauder. The Driller is a troop transport with no single corollary in the UEE. Instead we land smaller parties with Prowlers, Hoplite, Valkyrie, etc. There are also dedicated boarding ships on both sides.
The ship intended to hunt the Void Bomber is the Polaris. They mentioned the Void having torps, but I don’t think this is true. Rather, the Void Bomber is slated to carry 3 S10 Plasma Canons. So it can endure without running out of ordinance, meaning it has to be destroyed quickly. Killing the Void with S10 torps by surprise is now fubar with point defense weapons introduced. We’ll need to figure a work around. Probably wings of Eclipse launching at very short distance will be effective. Note, the Polaris has Cap class sensors while the Void has only Medium, so the Polaris can hunt on its own and lob torps from out of range of the Vanduul S10 Canons.
The big issue with the Polaris hunting the Void Bomber as originally intended is whether CIG has given the Void point defense. If they play that ship as always ready to shoot down torps, surprise is not going to yield great results. We’ll need surprise combined with the extremely short travel times of multiple Eclipse launching from 4km. I really hope they don’t have Vanduul bombers at battle stations 24/7 or automatic point defense. If that happens and you want to hunt Voids, I recommend looking at the Liberator launching 3 Eclipse and a fighter escort. If your S10 torps get shot down, the Polaris loses its purpose. Screw that nonsense that you need to shoot up the Bomber’s shield and defenses and screw CIG for betraying everyone who bought the Polaris.
Yes I’m still pissed.
There is a Vanduul cap ship not mentioned, unless CIG is cowering from their commitments. The Marauder is a destroyer set to duke it out with the Javelin. They’re mostly a match with the Marauder better armed and the Javelin better armored and with superior damage control—very much like the Yamato v the Iowa class battleships. To face a Marauder, a Javelin needs a skillful damage control team. Everything will depend on them.
From what I have seen, the Vanduul do not have a ship in the Frigate class like the Idris. They may get matched with the Driller, but odds are the Driller will lose badly in such a match. Idris may fall well into the frigate role of picket, by launching a cloud of small fighters forming a screen. I’m still an advocate of flying as many light fighters with jump capability off the Idris—the Arrow stands out with its tiny deck footprint. A screen of Arrows can be a game changer in any encounter, especially with the Idris’ big gun to back them up. I do not think it should trade shots with the Void Bomber though. That’s how scary the spinal mounts on the Void are. Plasma cannon don’t just blow shit up. They overheat systems and cause fires. Needs a skillful damage control team.
Also, the Vanduul have a super-heavy fighter that approaches gunboat class—the Stinger. If past intel serves, it will die quickly to the Redeemer, Hammerhead, Perseus, Paladin and Harbinger. Perfect target for S5 missiles.
What this all says to me is there will be a place for every size ship to serve slaughtering Vanduul in the Sons of Orion storyline. We should all thus seek fame and glory defending humanity from this sub-human scourge of the skies.
Kill them. Kill them all. They all deserve to die, Die, DIE!
Kill them I say, take their worlds for our own and set TEST ablaze across the stars as the victors by right of Trial by Combat!
Kill them all!
