This has been the missing piece for me.

The Quest as as standalone is great, but there are no "real" games like Fallout 4 VR or Skyrim VR on it. The current generation onboard processor can not run those open world games (yet).

Being able to hook up the Quest to the PC and play the PC VR games is the perfect solution, best of both worlds.

Probably the biggest news from the Oculus Connect event, you can play your VR games from your PC on your Quest starting November!

Zuck mentions it in the first minute of this video:

So what does it take to replace the SC twin sticks with virtual images of sticks so you can fly a ship without a physical interface past the Quest? Are we just waiting for someone to write an app that allows different kinds of stick setups, and once that happens you'll see your controls in VR?

Really good question by the way.

The programming should be in the VR software, or in some kind of interface between SC and the VR if you can't otherwise configure it. It needs just to send the right input to SC, which you can also customize to match. A good model to show what I mean, we can use Tablets and cell phones to provide input that would otherwise be in a joystick or keyboard. There's no reason why VR can't be accomodated that way.

One issue though and it can be a doozy. You need to be able to send the video frames at a minimum of 90 FPS, or turning your head can induce motion sickness. 60 FPS works with monitors, because that's not all you see. SC is not optimized for that. My video runs at 55-60 FPS, but occasionally drops to 30. I don't like vomit.

Not going to happen, its too complicated.

Someone here was complaining of motions sickness last week. I wonder if this was the cause.
You get motion sickness when the image is not tracking exactly the same way as your movement, its called latency.

If I turn left, my brain expects to see things moving in a specific vector. If there is a delay with the image hitting the eyes, your brain, in its wisdom decides that you have been poisoned and need to go throw up :D

I will respectfully disagree. I think we're headed there and Google has a vested interest to create this. We've had motion sensing keyboards and such for over a decade. We can detect tiny movements of thumbs and fingers holding VR sticks, so there is very little to stop this from happening. Right now, there is a hold-up with complex games like SC using VR because we can't see the sticks, so Google's obvious response is to put the sticks in the VR world. Then they are selling the sticks instead of everyone else. Google has both motive and opportunity. Also, games like SC where you are flying a ship are in many ways easier than standard VR, becasue you're seated. You can't stray from the simulation area.

Google has lots of reasons to do this.

Yeah. I agree. Google could decide to do it for SC though. With 14 million players and the number will rise, would sell lots of VR sets.
Its got nothing to do with google, its just a virtual mesh which you can interact with in VR. Its widely used already in every single VR game and is definitely a cool way to interact with a cockpit.

I think this is what you are talking about show in this game which is made by a small indie dev. Its not difficult to do, Im just saying that it adds a layer of complexity to a game like SC that they are not going to get into any time soon.

Even Elite Dangerous which is extremely VR friendly does not have these types of controls.

I tried the Void a couple weeks ago in Orlando, uses the Oculus headset and the hypatic suit, ran their star wars mission. Was pretty good, the full VR overlay. We did it twice on two separate days. Over all quite fun, but I noticed some input lag and a bit of off-set on the overlay.

All that said, was still a fairly immersive experience, moving across "narrow" platforms was realistic enough to make you nervous about where you put your feet and I could feel it when the wife was shooting me in the back. Might need counselling. The tech is really starting to get where it needs to be.

Give them a year or two. I'm kind of working on a related technology, visual augmentation instead of a game viewport, but we use essentially the same technology in a different way. A visual overlay instead of replacing vision. Both are essentially brand new technologies.
