Just something I've been working on the past couple weeks:
You're right about the companies, it doesn't make sense for Origin and CO to get together on something, but at the time I started this, and even now with the 400i rumors still buzzing around I just really like Origin atm and want to see something different from them. So I do agree with you. I'd been bored the past couple weeks when I did this though.Hmm I like the basic idea but something in the starting process doesn't quite fit.
First for a company like Origin is unlikely to offer to possible competitor both a share of theyr knowlage and a share of the profit, remenber Origin have some importat patened tecnology on theyr side and I think they'll be quite jealous of them (like the AIR intake on the 100 series).
Takeing example by the current day market and corporate behavior it will be more likely that Origin will buy a minor company that own the skill they desire, bringing then inside Origin itself rising the company know how and potential patened solution to sell too.
The socond thing that for me doens't quite fit is the partecipation with C.O.
C.O. is a company that set his motive to bring tecnology in the hand of common people, I don't see how this could get along with the luxury and elite style of Origin, I see them more as a competitors rather then allied on the market.
Plus if the Origin's idea is to create an "utilitarian" and "industrial" ship I think the best partner will be ARGO.: is a relative small comapany that is specialised in pure funcioanlity ship, with competence that vary from mining, to modular and multirole ships.
Plus, ARGO has born as an industrial constructor of mag-lev train, so a truly industrial focus manifacturer, that while minor in the ships market, does have a consistent know-how in the industrial sector that is what Origin miss itself.
Well about the ship iteself I like the modular things for sure: the ability for a ship to be able to adapt and to be adapted to multiple situation is a must have for me, so the base ship idea is, for me, absolutely apporoved. I'm not so entusiast of the actual modules especially with the current names. You're right about the companies, it doesn't make sense for Origin and CO to get together on something, but at the time I started this, and even now with the 400i rumors still buzzing around I just really like Origin atm and want to see something different from them. Putting that aside, what about the ship itself? The idea behind it?
I'm real bad with names tbh. They could literally just be named 500X-RE, etc and I originally had that but added the names for fun.Well about the ship iteself I like the modular things for sure: the ability for a ship to be able to adapt and to be adapted to multiple situation is a must have for me, so the base ship idea is, for me, absolutely apporoved. RE-Fronteer variant for example seams, from the name, more and exploration modules, so it will make more sense to have a workshop, a small laboratory, a medbay and a small hangar for a rover (like the G12 for example) rather then have a mining capability that doesn't really tags along withe the "fronteer" idea (you'll need very likely to refine those material anyway so is pointless having only the ming capability... and for refining those component you'll need to research them first...)
the "Sustainer" variant fell like it should be more a science and reseash vessel then others, to actually "sustain" a new colony by providing a study platform for the local enviroments deteming what could be edible, what could be dangerous, providing tecnical solution and new material derived and invented from scratch using the local material... and so on.
The cargo idea is nice but Orginin will unlikely to be able to compete with beast like the C2 or a Hull ships so is kinda pointless for me go to that direction for larger gargo while on the small-medium size cargo capabilit a normal rover hangar can do the work quite well ( see the Constallation and the MSR for example)
Finally I'm not really sure of the "Conqueror" edition... not becouse I don't see Origin being able to produce a military ship (remeber Porche actually prodcuce Panter turret during WW2...) but becouse a military vessel should have tenical solution that do not goes well with the other two use-cases.
For example while an explorer ship could favor a bigger fuel tank and a more fuel efficient system able to run with even basic fuel, a military vessel whould opt for a more sturdy and protected fuel compartment, to withstand damage and fire azzard and lean more toward a performance and durability engine over a milage one since, being part of a military structure, there will be other in charge of providing the juice to your ship...
For those reason I'm having an hard time seeing an exploration/science vessel be easily converted into a military ship since I consider the second one perform better while design ground up by theyr own (with the exception of trasport vessel sicne they doens't have the combat-survivability requirement of a front line ships).
Not sure about the Banu collaboration, eventually something with the Tavairn that, looking at gemini's weapon, seams to have a good sense of aestetics and smooth lines.I don't feel Origin is into this type of functionality, as well as Origin would work together with C.O. Origin is all about form and luxury, than function. Origin working with C.O. is like Bentley working with Hyndai, IMHO. Origin is for high net worth clients, business, but not for dirty jobs.
If Origin was to make a functional ship in cooperation with someone, I feel it would be Banu. And the ship would be functional in other way, than cargo or combat. As well as I would think the naming won't be in the standard 400, 500, etc.
I would imagine something like:
555T - Trader - An Origin-Banu cross, which would be the size of Mercury Star Runner, crew of 2, luxury living facilities aimed at long term travel and accommodation, small negotiations room/office, a significant cargo hold, and a trading desk / shop. The ship would have high speed, good shields, full-auto turrets, and it would prefer to run, not fight.
575E - Erudite - Long distance Data Runner. Same as above, but large cargo hold is replaced with large server room, highly secure, data purge function, etc. It would still have an office for sensitive data, and a shop to sell info to public, e.g. trading routes, resource-rich places for mining, but the shop would likely be kiosk based - pay for the info and get it uploaded to your mobiGlas.
595M - Medico - Private Hospital. Same as above, but instead of significant cargo hold, this one has an operating room and 3 top class med beds, one small medical warehouse, and a crew of 4, as you may need a pilot, and medical people, who may not be pilots, e.g. a surgeon, their assistant, and anesthetist. The feature of this ship is not really search and rescue, but high-end medical services to places where there is money. In this ship they can perform cyber-limbs/organs/implants, which are stored in the small med warehouse. The implants are installed in the operating room, and normal med beds are used for recovery. This one could also do cosmetic surgery, change of appearance, etc.
