So my wife thought it would be a fun idea to get a drum set for our 2 1/2 year old boy. Am I the crazy one in thinking this is probably not a good idea?

It is what we did for our grandson---our daughter think we hate her- LOL

Turn the tables and start playing the drums yourself. Your son and wife will soon want to get rid of them.
Even better: buy an electric guitar and start a rock band with your son. That way you will be the good guy for your son and your wife will get rid of the instruments (or it backfires and she becomes the singer)
