I'm building a new PC for Star Citizen to hold me over until release. Will this be the best choice? I'm actually trying to keep it around $500. What do you think?

ha, the very first forum post that will be moved to "Tech Support" forums when Munken is around. grats, you're a true Testie :D

Your build:

that'll do just fine. i think montoya has a similar build and he is happy so far.

I would spend more on the GPU, and that CPU may cause you trouble later on. CPU's don't improve average FPS very much, but they can drastically improve minimum FPS. Considering how hectic battlefields will be, I think CPU's could be somewhat important to this game. Not every game is like battlefield, some really do depend on the CPU. This game isn't finished, and I don't view current standards as the final thing. Leaving room to upgrade components when the final game does come around is important. In terms of will it run the current game, hell yes it will. It's a good current gen system.

Good choice on AMD, Star Citizen is going to be integrating Mantle, which should work out pretty great for AMD cards :DDDD

This was pretty darn close to my original build and should work just fine. That GPU should do alright for a while until you can upgrade. However, I would shovel out the extra cash for an i5 CPU and ditch the cooler. The stock heat sync and fan work just fine.

Are these newegg combos better?

AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core CPU, MSI 970 MOBO, ADATA 8GB MEM, WD Blue 1TB HDD, ZOTAC GTX 750, RAIDMAX Blackstone RX 700W PSU, RAIDMAX Viper GX Case

Or option 2

Intel Core i5-4690K Haswell 3.5GHz Quad-Core CPU, MSI Z97 PC Mate MOBO, ADATA 8GB MEM, WD Blue 1TB HDD, ZOTAC GeForce GX 750 1GB, Rosewill ARC 550W PSU, Rosewill Galaxy Case

All of those combos and listed PSUs will not cut it for a good build. Once I get home I can link my lovely PSU list.

With current GPUs a 7970/280x/970 is about as low as I would go to play SC at high with good FPS.

Also, Intel for CPU is a much better call now. AMD is working with graphics, not so much CPU

I pretty much agree with RussianJ, but give you a slightly different perspective on a few things, based on the longevity of parts.

Your most long-lived part should be your case. A good case should last you at least a decade, so make sure it's solidly built and actually will last that long. From personal experience, I have had my current case for at least 7 and only rarely even consider changing as it's a bit heavy to lug around a 78 pound computer when the occasion arises. It'll never happen unless for some reason I find it impossible to get the parts I want into the case, doubtful since it's in the top 10 of largest PC cases ever built.

Next should be your PSU (power supply unit). This is the single most critical part of your computer because it (obviously) supplies power to the rest of the computer. Make sure you get a quality one thaaat will last a good 3-5 years and be able to power your computer not only now, but in future when you add or upgrade parts. Get it from a reputable supplier and get enough power to run the parts you expect to get. Minimum 650W and that only if you never plan to go multi-GPU or have more than 2-3 hard drives.

When you choose a motherboard, CPU and memory, remember that CPUs can often be upgraded while keeping the same motherboard and RAM, but eventually you will have to replace them and, because CPUs have to match the socket on the board, and memory has to match the bus of both, you are likely going to need to replace two or all three parts of this "holy trinity" of PC building at once. AMD tends to use their sockets (the lynchpin of the triad) longer, but that has both positive and negative sides.

Everything else is pretty much interchangeable and you can replace them willy-nilly, though jumping the fence between AMD/ATI and nVidia GPUs can be somewhat involved so it's best to stick with one or the other for the lifetime of your PC. Hard drives, add-in sound cards (though the whole concept has been rendered more or less obsolete with built-in 7.1 on most good gaming motherboards) and so on are commodity parts.

I have a similar build (FX 8350, 660ti, 8 gigs of RAM), little bit better CPU, little bit worse GPU, and aside from the HORRID loading times and hangar module being an un-omptimized pig, it runs Arena Commander fine at a solid 50-60 FPS at 1080p High settings.
