Yes. CIG is working on the MFDs which will be needed in the larger multi-crew ships.
This is the first 'pass' with testing them.
This will change, especially in single seat ship. We will get the option to turn this ON/OFF.

What is missing, on some ships, is the VIS or helmet display.
As you stated, you can still get the info by Holding Z and W-A-S-D. This is not helpful in small fighters.

We are still assisting CIG in testing/troubleshooting at this stage so things will change.
It is easy to forget this while we are having so much fun each day.

It will get better.

Thanks allot for the info. I tried the Hornet and Avenger, both didn't had a VIS which is very inconvenient while fighting. No shield status, ship status or weapon status. I will TEST my other ships tonight.

No VIS:
Avenger
Glasius
Sabre
Warden
Gladiator
F7C
F7C-S
[EDIT] F7C-R
Black
Freelancer
Kore
LN

VIS:
F7C-M
Delta
Merlin
325A
350R
M50

Strange thing is: the 300 series all (the ones I have) have VIS, the SuperHornet has VIS but the other Hornets don't have VIS.

On the sabre anyway you can access the weapon groupings ( center screen) by holding Z, its just that you cant focus left or right using freelook like you can in the larger ships. Also, after doing this the first time in a play session it doesn't zoom in enough to read the next time. You can still adjust them if you memorized where to click but its annoying

The big problem without VIS is that you can't see your ship state, shield state and weapon overheat state while in fight. In the Sabre I don't have to change firegroups, worst case I must switch firegroups. In the Hornet I must configure the firegroups, depending on my loadout.
Dual stage trigger, first FG1, then FG1+2. If FG is overheated, then it would be better to switch firegroups so it will be FG2, then FG2+FG1. That way FG1 can cool down. I don't need VIS or MFD to switch firegroups, I have a console script in a macro which switches the fire button assignment.

Try holding z + s, you will have a zoomed view of weapons

Whoops, I only loaded one Panther on my Sabre

You can change the HUD view by using the < > arrows.

I reconfigured my Sabres HUD to see ship state and shield state, therefor I lost my targets state. Weapon state cannot be changed in the HUD view

Maybe it's just me, but I seem to need to tap Z (enter free look), then hold Z to manipulate dashboard. Then fire-groups can be tinkered. With the Hornets (other than SH), You can put more important info like shields and targets on the upper, easier to see panels. However, when exiting the ship for EVA or just to land, when I return, everything is reset before I adjusted anything.

I like the idea of reading the dashboard more that the helmet HUD. Still has a ways to go though.

I don't go in free look, just hold z and navigate with w s a d. I get a zoomed look on each MFD. I like the helmet HUD because you don't have to push any buttons to see the wanted data. I don't touch my keyboard during combat, my hands are glued on the HOTAS :D
