Why are rudder pedals so damn expensive? I was considering trying to build my own, hacking out an old 360 controller into something foot-controllable.

They are mechanically complex. You can't just take a rotating plate, the pedals also have their own axis.

This one looks promising. Then you also can reuse you 3D extreme, but it is not self centering and has no pedal axis.
