They can also be completely dead if memory serves me decent... Didn't they have a battery or something in the cartridge?

I actually have quite a few laying around somewhere, I never sold my favorites.
Yes they had batteries in them to keep the saves. They were normal cr 2023 coin cell batteries though and easy to replace if you know what you are doing :)
If you still have those games, then go for it. You sound like you know what you want. :D
Seems like it would be easier to just do an emulator.
