NVMe SSDs (whether PCI or M.2) are also much faster (lower access times) than traditional SSDs. Optane won't improve over those speeds from what I have read. It's just an alternative and it adds a caching later which again is not all that useful for game/data drives.

Indeed. Optane will most likely be on par with proper NVMe SSDs. But probably more expensive :P
Which means save the money & invest in more ships. ;p

I imagine by the time S.C. is fully server meshed/optimized,
the cost of optane drives may be cheaper & much more necessary.

I still try to understand usecase, and still fail. From personal experience - switching from good ssd to great m2 didn't bring noticeable difference in games/os loading etc. ( the great exception is synthetic tests ) ... so Optane would be nice for people who (for some strange reason) are still using hdd ... but that's it
That's what I figured so pretty much NVMe then I guess it will depend on the speeds they offer and the SC bonus if any.

My guess. CIG is has intel for the server end processing and intel is trying to leverage that into the gamer side sales... Wouldn't be surprised if there is a contract in there saying they can do this kinda thing. Like the game servers are optane powered and we need the tech too.... eh, seems to run according to plan on my machine without it though lol.

It would have to be priced to beat a Samsung imo, & I suspect it will be much more expensive, but will sport some cool SC branding & swaggage.
Maybe it will come bound with a new concept ship.

A coworker that actually knows this stuff says optane is ended towards low latency, having almost no ramp-up time and able to use it's full performance even with low queue depths. It's also supposed to be able keep the response times very low under heavy loads.

You might be onto something there. After all, they did do an AMD variant with special paint job for the pairing with the video cards in the NEVER SETTLE IN SPACE EDITION Mustang R9 Omega. Maybe Intel will be getting their own version of an RSI Aurora? I'll call it the RSI Aurora IS. Which will be a racing edition vehicle with better maneuvering thrusters at the expense of all luxury features as well as having only 2 S1 weapons & a maximum of an S1 shield. It will be the fastest Aurora ever that will explode on impact with anything it bumps into. Seems fitting to me.
My thoughts on the whole "optimized for star citizen" is that if you purchase this drive you get a test colored Aurora equipped with a limitless self-refilling keg. I think that would be just about optimized. Thoughts?

I had a thought, CIG has a game-changer ship... the Intel server node hopper, your new local servership for transponding sensitive org data, like the new brew recipes. I thought this was a good comment of mine, now it looks silly in retrospect.
CIG is sponsored by Intel Optane - all their dev PC's got them in and also PCS they use to demo / shows etc.
Now - if and how they are optimised for SC is a whole nother question!

Perhaps the entire SC / Intel optimization is simply that the 3.0 builds at CIG are on Intel optimized PCs for game development. Not that it will actually help any of the rest of us other than we get 3.0 slightly more quickly.
I read somewhere that the software for the enterprise edition drive DC4800X is quite expensive by itself. 1950.00 usd, I think it was.
I wonder how software dependent these drives will be, & if that is perhaps the optimizable element.
(Aside from you know, a themed heatspreader with a rainbowed-out LED Drake Enterprises logo on it)
