Good Tuesday morning to all! It is currently 0515 and a clear 40F (4C in non-freedom) in Little Rock. The Government has re-opened so I can still make money to give to Chris Roberts; and I can also do little things like pay my mortgage and put food on the table.
Last week was a doozie. Our 1 month old ended up in intensive care because he decided that breathing was too main-stream for him. We were there for 5 days, but we’re all home and well now. The Government stopped being functional (relativle to normal dis-function), and we still haven’t found a way to remove the fat man-child from office: Kim Jong-un. (Our leadership is the greatest. It is a stable genius. Grab’er in the p@$$y. Go Army.:neutral_face:)

You may be wondering (most likely not really) about the status of my cockpit build? Well, it is on hold until I finish my wife’s new craft desk so she can ‘Cricut’ more-better. (ask the Great Googley-moogley) That project is on hold until I finish the remodel of my shop. That’s on hold until I repair a rotted corner of my roof, and that’s on hold until I have warmer weather to do it in. All while maintaing 2 toddlers, an infant, and a wife. No rest for the wicked, am-i-right?!

Oh, and now there’s Spectre. Probably not an issue for most of your because you have awesome machines that can handle the update that is suppose to slow everything down, but I’m running an i7 880. That’s right, it’s a processor from 2010. I’m expecting the update to kill my computer, thus requiring me to need to build a new one. Yay. Almost makes me regert (spelled as intended) spending all of that money on having kids. Loljk.

So, AMD or Intel? I’ve used intel exclusively for the last 2 decades or so. Not planning on doing anything more than gaming and light Video/picture editing. Maybe sound editing as well. And of course porn- although they may not be such a good idea in a sim-pit... ahh, eff it. I’ll build in a tissue and lotion holder. Well just call it “immersion”.

Anyway, hope all is well and I hope to be back in the verse again soon. I haven’t been since 2.6, and I’m jonesing for some space action.

Oh I feel your pain, I built my last rig in 2010 with an i7-920 Bloomfield with its amazingly fast 2.2GHz....

Every year I keep telling myself that I'm gonna upgrade :confused:

*Edit* Oh and team red, because I'm assuming your talking about the color scheme inside the rig. And since I have red LED's inside my rig, you should to.

I think with red he means AMD and with blue Intel? I am no expert so I'm gonna say gold like the liquid that keeps us going!

I got nothing to add. I usually use Intel, but honestly Intel or AMD to me makes no significant difference. Intel usually runs a bit cooler than AMD for the IPS, but costs a bit more. The price usually comes out in the wash once you put a system together. Unless you're going with top of the chart performance, there is only really personal bias.

What I usually recommend, is set yourself a budget, and see what you can build with that money. Pay more attention to the motherboard than the processor.

I'm in the same spot with a Phenom 2 1055, 8gb of Ram and a GTX750 (non-ti version)... But Upgrade? Now?

1) Issues with the supply and demand of NAND memory is effecting the cost of SSD'd and Smartphones going nuts on the RAM specs have upset the supply balance and sent the price up on RAM. Thats bummed the prices to annoyingly high levels.

B) Sphincter and Getdown mean any current generation CPU you buy is inherently flawed. The next generation of CPU's will have the flaws built out of them and at that point this gen should be bargain basement.

III) Bitcoin has caused almost all Graphics cards to be overpriced. The people who make them don't want you to have to pay double to get a decent performance graphics card, but the Miners buying up the stock are killing the market - When Bitcoin dies, so will Graphics Card manufacturers because miners will be paving the streers of eBay with them.

If/When Bitcoin collapses there will be a lot of Miners trying to get their investment back. Supply and demand, I'm waiting for the bitpocalypse and then will take the piss on eBay.

You got the money, go for it but for a "Main" gaming rig to play SC on i'm going to wait until the game is mid-beta before upgrading to new parts and i'll be trying my damnedest not to overpay for them.

I totally agree with you on all points. The only things I’d need to change are the mobo, ram, and processor; and I won’t make a move until they fix this speculative execution issue. I’m running GTX 970s in SLI (I’m totally fine with gaming @ 1080p 60hz), and I have a pretty quick Intel SSD accompanied by a spinning platter that holds all of the crap. My ram is 16gig of DDR3 at CAS9 and I doubt that any next-gen CPU’s will support it- or at least not any that I’d want.

In that case what are you going to be doing with the CPU? If you are planning to overclock, i'd say Intel has the track record with stable OC's, if you are not interested in OC AMD is better bang for buck.

Overclocking and me are kind of... meh. Too much work and I’m the type of person that wierd and unusual things tend to happen to, so even the slightest overclocking makes me nervous. I might end up inadvertently raising Hitler from the dead, or at least create some equally obnoxious computer issue that no one would know how to fix.

Those familiar with Steve Gibson from the Twit network- he is a security analyst that writes programs and he made this:

It checks your processor for Spectre vulnerabilities, and determine the performance impact on your CPU that the current fixes will cause. Additionally, you’re able to disable the fix for increased performance (at the risk of no security against the vulnerability) and turn it back on again, with the caveat of having to restart your computer each time. Best part, IT’S FREE.
