I bought a San'tok.yai. I am not interested in the Khartu-Al loaner so I have come up with a scheme based on store credit I have. I am not comfortable with the melting/buyback system yet, so I want to check if the following will work.

I currently have a San'tok.yai warbond and a HullB->Mercury CCU in my Hangar and a credit buyback token.

Can I do the following:

Melt the CCU for Store Credit ($135)
Upgrade my San'tok.yai to Glaive ($130) using store credit.
Play game with Glaive for a while.

Then, when either the Mercury or the San'tok.yai is released and I want it:
Melt my Glaive (which is the San'tok.yai upgraded).
Buy back the San'tok.yai (with store credit, since I have a buyback token available).
Buy back the HullB->Mercury CCU (also with store credit, if I have another token by this time).

The upgrade will be permanently lost when you melt so you'd need to re-buy it during the next sale and hope the price hasn't gone up. Also be aware that CIG reserved the right to change the buyback program at any time and have publicly stated several times that you should only melt ships you no longer want. You can do it, but it's risky.

Risk aside (I appreciate the warning though)....

When you say "the upgrade" do you mean the Hull B -> Mercury upgrade would be permanently lost?

Or the Glaive upgrade? I'm okay if the Glaive upgrade is lost (since I'll have a sweet alien medium fighter).

Yes if you apply the upgrade to a ship the upgrade is gone. Once you melt the upgraded ship the ship returns to its original state. If i were you just enjoy the khartu-al for a while i dont think the star runner will increase in price by the next aniversary sale but who knows. I have a spare in my inventory atm banking on it going up so i can save some money on my final ship upgrade. Honestly the Khartu-al is pretty fun to play with it was my first ship on SC it does lack firepower but it has incredible manuverability and speed so you can go toe to toe with a medium fighter if you can learn to manage your energy and not get hit directly in the face(no forward shields).

Yes to the San Tok Yai, and no to your CCU for buyback. Once you use your CCU upgrade, it goes away permanently.

For any of this to become real you need to buy an upgrade to Glaive while you can .. I doubt it will be available for long.

Let me get this right, you want to melt the CCU for credits, not apply it. That means that it will stay in your buyback, however, if the Mercury rises in price, then also the CCU in your buyback will rise in price. On the other hand, what if the HullB rises in price before the Mercury rises in price.... interesting thought.

Buy back the San'tok.yai (with store credit, since I have a buyback token available).
Buy back the HullB->Mercury CCU (also with store credit, if I have another token by this time).
Here is a but... You can only buyback with credits once per 3 months, but..... You must wait until the next token drops before you can buy the second item with credits.
[EDIT]But you have taken in account this but....

I'm confused. There appear to be conflicting answers here, and several truly random posts.

Also, people seem pretty confident that the Mercury AND the San'tok.yai will release in the next three months? I don't follow development that closely but doesn't that seem incredibly unlikely? I think its unlikely we'll see even one of them.

Turns out: Glaives appear to be sold out all the same. Can't seem to get the CCU.

Quickly:
Can I do the following:

Melt the CCU for Store Credit ($135) --> YES (a CCU sitting in your "hanger" that you have never applied can be melted)
Upgrade my San'tok.yai to Glaive ($130) using store credit. --> YES
Play game with Glaive for a while. --> YES

Then, when either the Mercury or the San'tok.yai is released and I want it:
Melt my Glaive (which is the San'tok.yai upgraded). --> YES
Buy back the San'tok.yai (with store credit, since I have a buyback token available). --> YES
Buy back the HullB->Mercury CCU (also with store credit, if I have another token by this time). -->correction - YES --> you can rebuy a CCU that you never applied, but just melted

Dont think he has used the CCU, only melted it it. So in that case, yes you can

You have to wait until next anniversary sale. You waited too long, the Glaive was only available during the anniversary sale. Last year I picked up a 60 month Glaive, earned it multiple times, this year I picked up a 72 month Glaive.

Also, my understanding is that it might be available on Boxing Day? It was 2 years ago on Boxing day.

We'll see though. The whole "buyback is subject to change" warning did give me pause. I think the Mercury is more important to me than the Glaive. Maybe if I decide to CCU something else when it becomes available again (that way I can get an LTI Glaive - I know insurance isn't a big issue, but I have a bunch of ships and would prefer to be able to take any of them out once the game releases without being nickle-and-dimed by insurance costs.)

Bleh. Even I got confused reading the replies to this.

Firstly let's clear up the HullB->Mercury CCU. If you have NOT YET APPLIED the HullB->Mercury CCU to your Hull B ship, i.e the CCU is in your hangar listed as a CCU complete with the "Apply Upgrade" button available for you to click, then I call this a Virgin CCU, it has not been used to therefore you can melt it and buy it back at a later time.

However, if you have already applied the HullB->Mercury CCU upgrade to your Hull B, then you will lose the upgrade forever when you melt your Mercury, would call this a "Spoiled CCU" and if you melt it you will only have the original ship in your buy backs, I.e you can then buy back the hull B only, not the mercury. The $$ value of the mercury will remain on your account as store credit.

In terms of buy backs, there are two ways, you can buy it back anything in your buy backs list with real money i.e. your credit card, at any time you want. Secondly, you only can buy back ONE ship quarterly with store credit by using the above mentioned buy back tokens. Once you use a token to buy a ship you then cannot until the next quarterly token is provided. You can not build up a stash of multiple tokens, you only have 1 on your account available at any one time (or none, if you have spent it) so consider ones you do not use as "wasted tokens".
