I believe the correct answer is that you can stack more kegs of beer in a 600i. I mean, look at all the wasted space in the crew quarters, that's almost as big the the Aquila's whole cargo area!
I endorse this product or service


I drive without a seat belt, why wouldn't I fly with kegs stuffed everywhere in my ship?

There is one more thing the 600i explorer can do that Aquila can't, that is have a Argo-C (Cargo version) in the hangar on the lift.
Yes it will fit but there is not one inch to spare, drive it in from front of 600i pointing the Argo cargo nose toward back of 600i.
Then in landing mode the Argo-C landing gear fit perfect in front of the lifts arms, If it work or not have varied on patch.
But for size it do fit I've tried it a couple times and it 's tricky I wont put that under the rug... it is doable with some practice.

Then you have the perfect beer transport for the 600i to fill the hull with beer and don't have to land the 600i at all :P

You guys put a lot of stock in NPC crew. Knock yourself out, there's no reason you can't theorycraft around that. But my advice is, buy the cheapest ship you can now, that will give you the game play you want right now. You can upgrade later. It also avoids some of the pointed questions when your pregnant wife discovers there is a sinkhole in the family financial resources. You might want to minimize that as much as possible.

If you want to go out and explore with your ship and rover and then bring something back...without leaving your rover behind...the 600i is the one you want. It has a lower cargo limit than the Aquila, so the Aquila will be the better all around ship if you dabble in trade as well, but the rover takes up most if not all the cargo room in the aquila, while the 600i has a bespoke space for it's rover, plus additional space for the cargo.

Just something to consider.

The 600i can swap out the luxury suite for an exploration package, but it's not a BUK. You buy one or the other ship.


2) What is the benefit of having two scanners on the 600i vs one on the Aquila?

I don't think it has 2 scanners. It has two scan stations. We don't know what the difference is here yet, but we know there are three kinds of scanning and one supposes it can do at least 2 at once. However you should note the scan stations are not on the bridge of the 600i, so if you're scanning alone, no one is minding the store. Of course if you're scanning you won't be surprised unless an attacker is in stealth, but you should be aware that the time it takes to get from the scan station to the flight controls could be critical.

The Lancers, Connies, 600is, Corsairs, Terrapin and Vanguards all sport M radar. They are all theoretically capable of the same exploration, save unless CIG starts modifying scan with antenna packages, etc. I have never heard that rumor. Given the smaller ships are faster, they should theoretically scan larger areas in the same time, so it is worth looking hard at the Lancer, Space Turtle and Vanguard. Of all these ships, the Vanguard is probably the safest to fly solo, since only a moron will attack a Vanguard. (bluster intentional) If you want your explorer to be able to haul away cool finds like alien artifacts and such, then the Lancer is your best choice, IMHO.


3) Do you think CIG will eventually buff or balance the 600i to be somewhat commensurate with it's cost (minus the BS "luxury" tax).

Doubtful. Its not a bad deal as is. Witness how popular it has been since day one. Some players fly them every day.


4) Will the Aquila be just as "solo able" as the 600i?

I don't think either of them is a good choice for solo exploration. If you're going to be alone, I would see greater benefit from the higher speed of the Lancer. Running away needs to be the plan for all soloists. If you fly a 600i alone you should expect to have players take it away from you often. Pirates will be looking for situations EXACTLY like the one you create, with good reason. A free 600i is a nice catch, and an Aquila is pretty good too.


5) Will the lack of a snub on the 600i preclude me from any exploration gameplay loops?

Yes. Neither the 600i nor the Aquila can pass through the smallest jump points. A snub might (can they open jump points? I don't think we know yet), but that would be a little foolish, to leave your ship behind unattended. This is another reason to fly a Lancer if you have to solo. Solo explorers should be looking for the smallest jump points, since these present a special opportunity. The Lancer is the largest exploration ship that can pass through a small jump point.


6) Will the 600i or Aquila be getting another design pass/major tweak/rework in the near future (probably a silly question for Alpha, but yeah...)

Probably not.

Thanks so much for the insight and for sharing your thoughts. You are the third person to recommend the Lancer (the others being Talonsbane and Vavrik) and you guys are absolutely right. It is a perfect fit in almost every way for solo exploration. I actually started out in one a few years back, but couldn't get over the shitty view (LittleJoe = spoiled, whiny, graphics & immersion snob) and subsequently upgraded to an Aquila. Yesterday, I finally upgraded to a 600i.

In other words... I decided to stupidly throw more money into the wind and gamble my ass off. I essentially bought a ship that I hope will fit my idealized notion of a completely speculative game mechanic. No matter how you church it up, that is basically what buying a ship is at this stage in development. It's complete insanity.

Personally, I'll be happy if 50% of what I'm hoping for actually survives contact with reality. I guess I'll have to wait and see how the mechanics are implemented. In the end, I may end up melting the 600i and buying a Lancer instead.

I don't remember what the 600i is worth, but I bet it's somewhere around 3 and 4 Freelancer DUR's. That gives you some $$ to play with.

Don't be so hard on yourself! You're supporting game development, and since you purchased the most expensive of the birds with M scan , you can fly all of them in turn. Add the Cutty and Mercury Starunner to the list and check them out. Take notes and see what you like. That's what Alpha is for!

If it turns out that any M sized scan package will go into any M sized radar slot, and there are no significant differences in antennas and such (questionable since the Tally and Lancer have versions specific to exploration and could offer advantages), then the top speed is an important criteria, since your scan rate is linear with SCM.

Well that's the thing, you're not buying a ship you are pledging funds to the project so the game can be bigger and better. The ship is a reward for your pledge.

So firstly, thank you very much for making such a kind commitment to the project, you are helping to make the dream a reality.

And secondly, we don't know if the 600 is going to suck or not. Right now from what I've heared, it's turning out to be very okay. So nil desperandum there are always options like melting, as you say :)

One thing to note: Although the $ value may be X times the value of another pledge ship, in the final game a 600i will likely be 20 times that in game currency. Getting a 600i now may well be much more affordable than grinding up the credits for it in game.
