In the last couple of weeks/months I've seen a steady rise in the number of ads I get per video on YouTube on my phone and tablet. Instead of the usual 2-3 per 5-10minute video, I was getting up to 6-8 not counting the ones at the start and end of the video! It was getting really annoying, then one day a popup appeared that I should really try youtube premium. I declined. Of course the next time I opened youtube, I got the popup for premium again. I kept pushing nope until it stopped, and today the following happened.

Yep, you are seeing that right. All the ads I get are now double ads.
Was this always a thing in other regions and here they were just holding back until now?
Are they this desperate that they are essentially turning into a shitty commercial TV channel?
To answer me own question, they are becoming real scumbags. Yesterday the security cam footage of the Budapest boat crash was put online. Guess what youtube did. They put ads on it. Every single copy I found from various news outlets/uploaders had ads placed before the video by youtube.

It's been getting steadily worse for a while now. The ones that irritate me the most though are when you want to watch a trailer. I have had the trailer of the movie show up as an add before the actual video of the trailer... I don't know much about monetization of youtube videos, but I do know that some channels are far, far worse than others. I usually just click off them and watch a different video that isn't trying to pay their entire month's rent off my single view.

I agree. Most videos that show up in recommendation lists that I see have two pre-adds, and then a trailing add which is followed by the entire process repeating over for the next video. This is almost always accompanied with an add for their premium service, but I'm not going to pay for that because they don't show picks from my subscriptions often enough for me to trust that it's not just a money grab.

I've hit skip on every single ad to the point where I get questionnaires asking if I've even heared of stuff.
Lol, yeah I used to do the same, but as I work on ads, I do pay attention to what ads are playing. Despite this, I genuinely have to tick "never heard of em" in 9 out of 10 of these questionnaires cos they never show ads for them lol
I caved and signed up for premium.
I got so used to touching the skip ad on my iPad that I instantly move my hand to the right spot after tapping on a video, and then I'm surprised every time that there is nothing to skip 😂😂

If I start getting double ads I'll just click through to them and then bounce. It's not that I don't absorb whats being pushed at me - car, toilet roll, cheese, a lot of American stuff I can't even get in the UK, whatever it is... It's that my life is generally not compatible with any of the junk they try to push at me. It's not just Youtube, it's everywhere - Some recent examples:

1) Youtube constantly pushes mobile-phone game apps at me via ads probbably because I watch a bunch of SC videos. I don't have the type of mobile phone that can play those types of games. Oh, I've got a smartphone, but the few games I downloaded and tried to play were choppy and non-responsive. They were okay games from decent publishers, but my phone couldn't do them justice. Unless YouTube wants to buy me a new phone, I'll stick with that I've got because I'm not paying for a new phone so I can play a handful of mobile-only titles when I have a PC I'm playing and enjoying SC on. Irrelevant.

B) A social media site kept pushing a car key replacement service, where you send them your spare car key and for a mere $16,000 they will take the chip out of it and put it in a new fob made of gold, platinum etc. Well my key doesn't have a chip because it and the car it works on is 25 years old. My cars immobilizer is the type you physically bolt to the steering wheel. If I had $16k to blow on binging my keyfob, that service is not compatible with me anyway. Irrelevant.

III) Another social media site - dog grooming equipment, we don't have a dog, no plans to get one. The cat wouldn't appreciate it. Irrelevant.

Four) Another social media site - An ad for a company the place I work at is in direct competition with. Yeah, they may be a little cheaper than us, but I get a 30% staff discount which blows that out of the water, if I so chose to buy what we sell. Irrelevant.

These ads, they are not for me, so why should I pay attention to them? The one or two ads they would get any benefit from are now skipped with the rest of them. It's quality, not quantity, they need to focus on. I must see 100 ads a day. I ignore all of them. If I saw 10 ads a day that were all relevant? They may have better luck raiding my wallet.

Lol, 16k for a key fob hahahahha Even if I had that kind of money and was looking for a service that does that I wouldn't do it through a YouTube ad probably...
My older car is 25 years too! Nice! What's your ride? Mines what you call a mk3 Astra.
Agreed on the games they push, same here.
I don't get any of the ads you mentioned. It's really boring how they push the same ads over and over. 50% is android games. The other 40% consists of One for a well established food delivery service that everyone uses anyways, one for a new one no one will ever use cos there is no need and it's overpriced, and a totally idiotic 5sec ad for an insurance company that doesn't make any sense at all.
The last 9% is ads for Wish (overpriced Chinese junk store) and some app that enables second screen usage on iPads.
I do get some cooking related ads, and one of them is a webseries where they make some celebrities cook something while the host messes with them. They have to wear handcuffs, bags over their heads, have monster heads in the fridge and other jump scares, and opening the tap usually opens a little sprinkler above their heads instead. It's really well made and quiet fun, it's about the only ad I watch in full length lol It's selling margarine of all things lol

And it's after these ads that they ask silly stuff like if I've seen ads for the following brands of washing up liquid, and they lost four brands that aren't even available in my country 😂😂

As you can tell, the lack of any variety was really getting annoying. Getting two ads of the same android game in a row got old real fast so I just accepted the offer for the free trial. No ads anymore for me!

Mk3 Astra might be what I trade up into when the need for a 4 door comes along. I've a 2 door Citroen AX, 945cc's of pure unrefined CAR.

Yep that's exactly the thing I get, and it almost always turns out to be for brands I'd have to import.

After the first five questionnaires I gave up answering honestly and started saying "no" to absolutely everything. "Have you heared of this?" Nope and googling it appears to be Swedish "Can you recall seeing an ad for the following?" No I skip ads, all ads, I not seen an ad for anything in the last 10 years at least. "Which brand are you most familar with?" No."Whats your social security number?" one two thr... hey?!

For unskippable ads I just close the window, and if I really want to watch the vid I hit the mute button and look in another tab for a few moments. Facebook started doing a thing where if you went off the tab or scrolled down it would pause the ad until you came back. Stopped watching videos on Facebook fixed that, ads in the middle of the video also got the same reaction, move away from the vid.

It's not that i'm anti-advertising, I don't use ad-block because I know advertising is needed to fund sites and services if I don't want to put my hand in my own pocket... It's just the amount of data I know they have about me and none of that stuff is relevant. 10 relevant ads a day, yes take my money. 10 relevant and 90 irrelevant, I am skipping them all and no one gets my attention.

That's a very cool car man!
If you go for an astra, if fuel cost is an issue get the newer ecotec, but if you want something reliable and fun go for the 1.6 8valve c16se. Bulletproof, fast revving, does a mean 0-35mph which is great in city light to light traffic. 0-60 isn't bad either, but I wouldn't recommend it for Autobahn travel. You can almost rev it to redline in 4th doing about a 110mph, but the 5th isn't much lower and gets loud for long runs even at legal speeds. But at least you can buy cheap bimmer looking angel eyes for it lol
Sadly that engine is rather rare though as everyone and their mother pulls em and puts it into original minis and kit cars.
Last piece of advice and I promise to stop with the car talk lol: watch out for loads of rust around the rear: fuel filler, rear window and wiper are the worst spots. My rear left shock came right through the tower, even though the paint looked pristine, so watch out for that too. Also the usual places like the bottom end of the quarter panels, around the lifting points on the sides and underneath and such.
If you weren't in the UK I'd gladly sell you mine for the couple of packs of beer they usually go for, at least it would have a decent home. It's mostly just sitting and waiting for its fate. Probable conversion to track day car by way of "weight reduction, bro" . AKA throw out everything except for one seat and that's it lol

@Mich Angel adblock plus works great on pc, already got that, but what about in the Android youtube app? Does it stop the ads there, or do I have to go through a browser? Cos if only the latter, then it's kinda useless to me, I can't be bothered.
