Ballista as LTI token? You can upgrade it, right?

I just want to double check, I heard a strange thing on the chat today, but it appears to be somebody was confused.

The person said you could only upgrade the Ballistia to the Prowler. When I checked that, it appeared that there was (accidentally) an option to upgrade to the Prowler, but that was removed.

I just wanted to confirm with somebody who had a Ballista that, indeed. you could upgrade it to anything (above the list price, that is).

Thanks!

Some upgrades you can select, but if you try to actually make the purchase, the system will give you the "Not today buddy" thing. In those cases, you have to wait, for lord knows how long. The alternative is melt and use the credit to get something else I suppose, but I don't have a lot of experience melting ships, I only ever did it twice.

Since the OP wants to use it as an LTI token, melting it is not an option. That said, you can use it to upgrade to a non-limited ship over 140 usd and you will keep the LTI

New stuff is sometimes locked for a while (i think usally around 1 month after the sale is over)

They had a system that ground vehicles can be only upgraded to ground vehicles but i think they removed that because of to much positvie community feedback.
Yes that have been the case lately, you can't upgrade a concept wile it is on concept sale.
That option comes later, don't know how long after.
And yes there is no limit between ground <-> ship <-> ground upgrade any more if it is avail in store that is. (you can not downgrade only upgrade to more expensive)

Well, why not get LTI if you can? One less thing to have to pay UEC for after you crash, or the game crashes, or someone decides to gank you while you're trying to land. And you might even get to pay less for the ship.
Mmmm thats not exactly how the insurance policy works in SC. Irregardless of if you have LTI or a 6 month premium, your ship still gets replaced if any of your above mentioned events take place. The only difference between LTI and 6 month (or however many months) is how often you have to renew the policy, which will not cost much, according to CIG.

Yes and no.

I think the insurance for a small fleet will be not that relevant. But they will have to make it somewhat relevant to avoid abuse of the insurance system for griefing other players.

Larger fleets ( concierge level) it might be a lot more relevant especially if you're lending ships or stuff like that ("for free")

Reminds me of a guy i used to know. He owned a collection agency, his motto was "It's a thrill to pay a bill"... no it's not. It's a thrill not to have the bill in the first place. Before you go trying to downplay the value of LTI, consider we don't know what the value of the insurance will be. "Not much" is quite a nebulous amount, but it's astronomically more than LTI.

Rest is probably TL;DR. Summary: LTI has real value.

For example, recently I bought one of the Ballista variants. I would have paid $20.00 less for the LTI, $120 rather than $140, but I paid an extra $5 for a different paint job that I liked better. I'm still $15 ahead vs someone who didn't buy one of the LTI versions. If you don't want LTI, then you're welcome to buy the vehicle for $140, and you still need insurance.

Lets crunch some numbers, just for argument's sake. So let's say the value of insurance is, say 2% of the value of a ship per month? That's fair I'd say. Or 1%? That sound suitably small? I mean it's a coffee/month, big deal. I don't even know the value of my ships off hand, it's between $4000 and $5000. Using the lower amounts, that's $40/month... 480/year. Extra.
Meanwhile, the guy with LTI paid less for his ships, and could use that $480 to take his wife out to dinner a few times. Buy the roses and a "I'm sorry for spending so much money on Star Citizen" card, and still have enough left over to buy another ship. Because he's a masochist...

you know we are talking about a video game right? lol renewing insurance will cost in-game money, which isnt very difficult to come by right now, nor will it be in the future if my assumptions are right about CIG making a fun space sim game. Assigning real dollar values in savings for insurance whereas you use virtual dollars you make in a game to buy it doesnt correlate.

It's an illustration. I have no idea what the price, value, or currency for insurance will be. Until CIG tell's us, nobody knows. But ships with LTI we don't have to care about the price of insurance in any currency. It's lifetime insurance. This I do know. CIG has 500 employees or so, office rent, office furniture, computers, bills to pay, and internet services their income depends on.

Where is the real money to pay for all that supposed to come from?

Well here is how I see LTi ....

If you own say 1,2.3.4 or 5 ships... LTi might not make any difference say renew cost is measly 100 uec for small ship and 300 for the larger, say you got 3 small and 2 larger and 6 month insurance.
That would be 900uec /6 month to renew, or 1200uec/year to keep insurance up to date, as said not much to be worried about peanut cash...

Now do the same and you got 20, 25, 30 or even more ships and some of those are large some very large and maybe one or two capital ship.

And bet the cost to renew very large to capital ships wont be a measly 100 or 300uec.

The not so big deal renewal insurance every 6 moth would start to add up to considerable large sum of UEC and fast.

Well 6 month you think, long time to earn that cash.... okay so I'm going to spent a bit or a lot of my time hulling, mining or what ever just so I can renew my insurance...
..........sound a lot like farming.

Hence I always go for LTI then whether or not it is a big deal or cost little to renew, I don't have to care about it one bit and I never have to renew insurance ever again..

Totally worth, I can put that money to other stuff I might want or just save it up for a boring day or insurance for my cargo..!

LTI 🥰
