Why not just get the 72 month insurance? its practically LTI
I know I'm not going to be able to earn one of these in-game so it's that "practically" that makes a difference to me for a big ticket item like this. for that much money and assuming all our hopes come true with the game making it to 6 years and 1 day, it still shouldn't even be a possibility to lose it forever due to unexpected misadventure...and the wording in the knowledge base does use phrases like "lost forever" . I have no idea what the in-game economy is going to be like so I have no idea how hard or easy it is going to be to grind UEC . If this past year is any indication I may end up going a month or more without going into the game and from what I understand about the insurance the clock is ticking even when you aren't logged in.

You will never lose a ship you payed cash for, forever. CIG has come forward to give us that much info.

So for instance, lets say you let your insurance expire and your ship explodes. You simply renew the insurance and then you get your ship back via reclaim button. No extra payments, no hidden fees.

Well for one you can never lose item in SC that you paid real money for how ever you can lose them temporarily for various reasons.
There will be a insurance fee to pay to get a new one back, so I say from 60 month or more on a ship insurance is as good as LTI.
72 month that's 6 years you have on you to gather cash to pay for next 6 year insurance and if you think about it how many game have you ever played 6 year.. ??
Just saying. ;)

CHEERS! 🍻

Edit ha ha... : I wrote that same time as you @Printimus :P

Rhetorical question to illustrate a point ... In a system like this, why would anyone pay monthly insurance?

That isn't the point. LTI is insurance. This is about premiums that you pay. Not about premiums that are covered by LTI.
i am simple minded, yeah, you don't have to pay ins on the base ship with LTI. but you still might want your shield generator, weapons, etc covered which would amount to a premium you would pay monthly. just cheaper

It is not about paying insurance. It is about getting the benefit of insurance, after the loss.

An illustration. You, me, and Bob bought identical cars at the dealer at the same time. I got mine with Lifetime Insurance. You have a monthly insurance payment that you make every month. Bob, he's not a bad guy but he doesn't like insurance so he doesn't pay for it. 9 months later, on the same day all 3 of us have an accident that writes off our cars.

I get a new vehicle because I am covered by Lifetime Insurance.
You get a new vehicle because you paid your insurance premiums.
Bob does not get a vehicle automatically ... but if he makes one insurance payment now, he can get the same benefit you have and not only gets his car back, he also saves the money from all the insurance payments he did not make.

Who got ripped off?

Edit: Apologies to anyone named Bob who makes insurance payments on time.

For myself: WoW - off & on since January 16, 2007 / IMVU - on & off since July 6. 2006

Which is partially why I appreciate LTI as much as I do. I'd love nothing more than for SC to be up, running & expanding for longer than WoW, after SC is officially launched.

the LTI covers the ship, not equipment installed on it i believe. so ins would still be needed for most instances.
Actually, the ship insurance covers everything that came with the ship from the manufacturer. CIG has stated that several times. That's why it's a big deal to get your ships upgraded at the manufacturer because that updates the components that you will receive installed in your ship when you file the claim, if you upgraded them through that system.

Which is great on most ships, but not so much on demilitarized ships like the Jav that they have stated will come as basically bare hulls of the ships that the player will have to provide all of the components & weapons.

I've played several games for more than 6 years, and some for more than 10, and more than a few for longer. One game in particular I have played through 3 different publishers since 1985 or 6... can't remember which. I played also, several Chris Roberts titles and I did not follow Star Citizen because of Freelancer. It was mostly Conquest but I had also played a few iterations of Wing Commander. I never had a chance to fully appreciate Conquest, because of events later that year, and never played Freelancer as a result.

Yeah I know, I played a couple way beyond 6 years, so yes it happen but it's is not common, this is also why I preferably buy with LTI always tho if nothing else is avail than 60-72+ month I'll take it.
But yeah I will change that to LTI if opportunity come along, but either way it's a long time to progress in a game so most likely for one or two ships it's doable with a 60-72+month insurance.

If it was up to me, the day before SC goes Beta, I would convert ALL ships (that includes the Raven & Omega) in hangars at that point from x months of ship insurance to LTI as a way of thanking ALL Alpha backers. Which should also help act as a last moment reason to buy out the ships in the buybacks so that they can reap the rewards.

LTI will eventually ONLY be available with new ship concepts. So if you missed the original concept sale (possibly because you are new to the game itself), you will have to settle for non-LTI insurances. CIG has tried to let us know that LTI and normal monthly insurances act the same in every way with the exception of renewal.

LTI and normal monthly insurance are not in question. I am questioning what happens to someone who has not kept their insurance up to date, and they lose their ship. You said

to which I am asking, what about the insurance arrears... the insurance they did not pay?

As I recall, CIG stated that all ships & items purchased with real money will remain in your account even if its insurance lapses & is then destroyed. That you would just have to pay the insurance premium to be able to file the claim to get it back in your hangar to again be available for you to use in game. I hope this makes sense.

About 11 years ago I payed 300 dollars for a lifetime membership for LoTRO before the release because I like the IP, had played in the beta and was willing to take a chance that it would last and it payed off, the game is still going with new content still being released. I'm hoping that SC has the same success.

What I was going off of was the Insurance entry in the RSI knowledge base, which looks like it was updated last on August 28. If CR or someone official has said something different elsewhere more recently let me know. The parts that I was referring to say

"The way to ensure that your property will not be lost forever when these events happen is through insurance policies for your ships.
WHAT IS INSURANCE?
Pilots in Star Citizen will be able purchase insurance policies in-game for their fleet. This ensures that your ship will be replaced should it be destroyed or stolen."

They say that insurance is there so your ship isn't "lost forever" and "ensures that your ship will be replaced should it be destroyed or stolen". Their wording gives me the impression that it is possible to lose your ship completely in the game. They don't mention anywhere that there is an exception for ships payed for with cash or being able to pay for the insurance afterwards and get your ship back if it lapses.

As for LTI itself it says

"WHAT IS LIFETIME INSURANCE (LTI) AND HOW DO I GET IT?
Lifetime Insurance, or LTI as it is commonly referred to, is a basic insurance policy that will cost the insured player no extra UEC payments to maintain their coverage...

Players will still need to cover the cost of insurance claims and repairs, regardless of if their ship is covered by LTI or some other standard, finite-length plan."

So LTI isn't going to mean you don't still pay something at the time of replacement, but the option to replace it is always there. At least that's how I'm reading it.
