This morning the unthinkable happened.
I accidentally bumped THE coffee cup, sending it crashing into the sink, knocking a chip out of the rim. But gentle readers, that is not the worst of my crimes. I tumbled it into a sink full of hot, soapy water.
I felt a great disturbance, as if millions of memories of brisk mornings and chilly evenings had suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I stood dumbfounded as I watched the cursed soapy mixture dissolve the rich mahogany from the sides of the cup, watched in mute horror as the gleam of porcelain began to peek through, I watched all and was lost to despair.
No, no, this cannot be happening, this is just a horrid dream and I shall awaken soon.
Dammit! Why couldn't I have been more careful, I glanced away only for a second.
Please, please, let at least some of the seasoning remain, I will be more diligent in the future, I swear.
Well, crap. What is the use? It is all for naught, I should just throw it away, walk away from it all.
No, no, I can rebuild it, ingrain new memories, new experiences, I can do this...
I beseech you gentle readers, do not make the same mistakes as I, always place THE coffee cup well away from the sink. I leave you now wiser, and more careworn.

Where there is an end there is a begining. Here is to 10 years of future generations of bacteria.

At least you're allowed to have a mug like that. My family keeps washing mine when I'm away, and breaking them...so I started using just store bought ceramic mugs. It's not the same, but I don't care when they drop one. My oldest son is the only one in the family that understands, he's Navy.

Exactly! So far, only my military/prior military friends know the true horror of what happened.

Lol, I completely understand the horror. I'm not allowed to keep the cup at home, that would never fly: but at work...
Sigh. Sucks to be me... I keep my favorite mugs in my office, that's how my family gets ahold of them when I'm traveling. But I work from home if I'm not traveling... and airplane cups aren't made of anything I want to think about drinking coffee out of.

back in the day I dumped a girlfriend for washing my venerable cast iron frying pan with soap and water

I knew I would never find it in myself to forgive her

Some things can never be forgiven. I commend you sir. A well seasoned cast iron pan is a treasure that cannot be understated.
it was a tough call

she was built like a brick pagoda and eager to please

it came down to which was more easily replaceable

in the '70s 'liberated' chicks were a dime a dozen

of course, I have recently adopted a more politically correct attitude toward persons of the female persuasion

yeah, right

Along the lines of "DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU" a local fellow in my county blew up his RV...he was welding near a propane tank, started to watch an instructional YouTube video, and decided he wanted a cigarette...yup...you guessed it.

My favorite part:
police officers and firefighters arrived at the scene to find the RV destroyed and pieces of Darrel Penner’s cell phone stuck in his head.
