I read something the other day where it sounded like the player was overclocking his guns. I was unaware that is in game. Who is doing this and what can you tell us about it?

Specifically, which components can/cannot be overclocked? How do you repair overclocked items after use? Can you reduce the cooldown and spool time of a Q Drive through overclocking? (I recently saw a vid of a guy flying missions in an Eclipse, who was microjumping over and over, and he was jumping so quickly it made me think maybe he overclocked his Q Drive.)

I know overclocking stats have been available on the various spreadsheets for several patches, but I have never seen a discussion of this and thought it was all still future. I confess I am extremely interested in overclocking so long as I can regularly repair the components. Can you just remove overclocked items to your inventory and when you retrieve them they’re fixed? How does it work?

When did you last sign in?

Anything but Coolers can be overclocked right now, it is done from the Power or Heat MFDs, and the repairs are done through MobiGlass at hangars and landing pads (though there's a bug currently that requires hovering instead of landing at most of them.)

Once the ship has been called you cannot change the components until you've filed a claim on it, and upgraded components remain (but are fully restored too.)

So when you overclock a Q Drive, do you have a choice which stat to enhance: travel speed, efficiency or cooldown and spooling time? I’m very curious about optimizing the last of these and microjumping like a bunny.

Take the GT215, it has 8000 bullets, shoots 10 bullets/second. That is 800 seconds of shooting!!!! Overclock it and you get 15 bullets/second. Overclocked it will overheat in 20 seconds or so, still 300 bullets out.

Yeah. That especially appeals to those like myself who harp on trigger control. The ballistic gattlings all carry a lot of ammo so if you’re careful, it should nearly always outlast a battle. The more damage a weapon does, the more enhanced performance overclocking should provide, so it’s hard to beat the brrrrrrt, brrrrrrtrrrrrt. The Mantis GT-220 is a huge upgrade from the GT-215. Bigger projectiles penetrate deeper. But the sledge do less base damage and don’t benefit nearly as much as the brrrrrrtrrrrrt, brrrrrrrrt!

Right now overclocking is just an on/off, you don't get to pick which features are overclocked. I'd have to look up which specific stats are increased for quantum drives when they're overclocked.

There's also quite a variety of quantum engines now with very different stats depending on what is important to you for a particular ship in various situations.

Careful overclocking the QT drive. It has a tendency to overheat depending on the drive and it'll kick you out of quantum when that happens. Makes your trips WAY longer.

Do you get what the ability to quickly QDrive jump again and again yields to the player?

This is a huge big deal on the battlefield and even affects what you enable during stealth.

Pardon me, but WTF people don’t get this?

Because the feature is still incomplete and is buggy. Right now you can overclock a feature but it takes damage that can only be repaired at the moment when hovering over a landing pad or after you have summoned the ship before taking off. Overclocking the QT tends to just cause it to overheat and drop you out of warp and then you have to wait for the cool-down period before you can spool up and continue on warping. While it might be beneficial on short trips it has shown to make longer trips even longer than not overclocking.

Overclocking and/or damaged thrusters are wonkey in that they have a chance to miss fire and when they do they throw out a thruster value well beyond their typical max and thus can lead to the horrific flight of the wile e coyote.

At the moment while you can overclock things you do not get to pick which feature is effected and so the wait for modular plugins and specific feature overclocking as well as in ship repairs.

The other aspect is the server latency has a far more significant impact on combat outcomes with many pips not really registering with the server as hits, target locks repeating multiple times and other detrimental behavior due to the servers being overworked.

So the outcome is the little overclocking that can be done is not very beneficial and so it's mostly ignored. The little bit of time that can be saved on short trips is not helpful in most cases and the requirements to fix components make it time-consuming.

Actually you can't choose how to overclock, simply every component have a different benefit form overclock, like weapon shoot faster or similar.
For QD the overclock benefit the spooling and calibration time, not the travel speed or the fuel consumption.
Only real drowback form the oerverclocked component are generally a more quick overheat: for weapon this is more eviident and for some a real thing to keep in consideration (like for laser repeater), while fo other is basiccally a non issue (like gatling, 20 sec of continius fire is unlikely unless you'll like to waist a lot of bullet). Regarding to QD they tend to overhgear during travel, but yoy ccan freealy overclock them, jump and then de-overclock for a safe travel.

Power generator and cooler can't be overclocked anymore, while shields can but is not really clear the effect of the operation on the shield performance and they can overheat.
Truster and manuver trsuter can be overclocked, and I assume that will, be a similar effect to a constat boost, so they'll overheat easily

Yeah. That especially appeals to those like myself who harp on trigger control. The ballistic gattlings all carry a lot of ammo so if you’re careful, it should nearly always outlast a battle. Err... sledge adtually do MORE damge for single shot simply they have a lower fire rate. Also they have a low pojectile speed so even if the effective range is grater they are easy to evade.
For the gatling as I state over they overclock on 20sec of cotinius fire, but is weary nulikely to happen since just a few seacond of pause will bring theyr heat down.
Also the cooler performanc wiill effectt the heat dissipation, so with a proper cooler is possibile that even with a overcclock gatling you'll never overheat (to be confirmed, nerver tested by myself).

Conclusion: overclock to speed up spooling time, disengage overclock while traveling 🤷‍♂️
