I was looking at a few of the luxury ships and trying to work out whether I should buy one.

I want a ship that's fast. Or serves a purpose (mining/exploration/salvage/medical etc). Or is tough as old boots / is armed to the gills. Or all of these!

The luxury ships don't seem to tick any of these boxes, do they? They let you swan about the galaxy in a slow-ish way in a less well armed, less shielded (concede that's not 100% the case) vessel. Albeit in style but that doesn't float my (space) boat. Am I missing something?

You guys can float around all day long in your poncey ships pretending your rich and important - I'll be flying around in my old retaliator. Not quite so comfortable, but much more purposeful. Home!!!

Yes: you want a ship that is OP, and that check all the boxes in different role... This is not going to happen in SC, is like pretending to have a sport car, that cosume like a Electric citycar, have a good engine sound, beingable ot tow a boat and can funcion like a Camper becouse you'll like to go seaside withe the family... you just missed that it need to be cheap like a bicicle and that you have it all...

If a ship is going to mine, is not a combat ship, it will not be "armed to the grills", and it will not be fast...
Fast ship will be small, that mean not thought, not armed ot the grill and defenitly not multipurpose...

If you are looking for a single ship that make all the thing at the top. good luck with that...

Not sure which ships you are talking about, the 600i, Phoenix, 890 jump? Not to many actually in the game yet and what are you comparing them to? I personally think all three of those are pretty damn nice and come with features their counterparts do not. Its always going to be a trade off, pro's and con's for both you have to weigh them out for yourself.

I'm not. I'm looking for a purpose for luxury ships (as per title!). If they are meant to show off in, I'd at least want them to be properly shielded.
There currently is no point outside of RP to utilize a luxury ship. This is not to say they are terrible ships as the Origin 300's are decent ships, but when you look at the 600i touring and 890jump they currently don't have any purpose.

To crash and burn while sipping wine and looking good doing it? Honestly maybe that is the game play. But my hunch is that CIG will tune ships like the 600i and 890J to hold their own. No reason we can't fight while looking good. I think CIG also still has plans to build some VIP game play for these ships.

Ya man, I don't have any luxury ships, nor the extra cash to fund them. Got some workhorses in the fields I'm looking to get into, and then earn the rest in game. Honestly, the funding keeps coming. Let the rich mofo's keep tossing in $$, better for the game, better for us. The skies will be full of cannon fodder.

I'm probably mistaken but didn't they say that you could only do certain VIP ferry missions in nicer ships eventually?
I think so.

I got an 890 because initially I just wanted to consolidate the value of all my small ships into a few big ones. It eventually grew on me and now I love it. I'm the type though that likes just taking in the scenery and it's perfect for that. I load the hangar up with an m50 and just kinda cruise the verse. It takes forever for anything to pierce its shields and it can get anywhere in the system in a moments notice. Like it's been said, it should offer VIP missions made exclusively for these luxury ships at some point but I don't think it will be anytime soon, as with most things.

Owning an 890j also makes your E-peen look massive. Im sure all 890 owners can agree.

I had a 600i and I think luxury or not, its a great ship to explore in so it's easy to look past the fact that its a fancy ship imo.

I don't want you and your banker wanker croquet playing friends tainting our memory of your Retaliator!

Yes there will be A.I. driven and most likely RPG aspects where real players will want V.I.P. access to luxury ships, they may not be as abundant like cargo missions but most likely the pay will be much higher. There is a planned purpose, so like certain A.I. driven V.I.P. missions wont let you pick them up or accept the job in a Cutlass black, most likely there will be a pre-requisite to getting the missions as well as a ratings systems, so maybe you have to have a 5 star rating to get that extremely valuable and rare mission.

The story of Origin and luxury began a long time ago - around about the original Kickstarter of 2012.

The 300 series were the fast agile interceptor to the Anvil Hornets well armored tank. Less pew, more speed, less armor, more agility. The 300 had it's place in the 'Verse.

And then the project ballooned. More manufacturers, more models, more ships all vying for a place and purpose.

I think the end of the 300's role as competition for the Hornet came when the Aegis Sabre became a thing. Suddenly there was a new heavier armed, heavier shielded nimble fast fighter. Another nail in the coffin was the 350R, the "fastest ship you'll ever call your own" losing the top speed crown to the Drake Herald of all ships. A tin bath with a rocket engine strapped to it out pacing a dedicated speedster designed dream.

So the 300 series lost it's every footing in the 'Verse. More Origin models came. The style guide changed and indeed the 300 itself was changed from angular racy dangerous looking machine to something a bit more family oriented losing it's 1000m/s while sat still on the pad look - It went from Zonda to Honda.

There has been theory crafting that an Origin will provide Rep which will let you into some missions or deals you may not have got in a Drake or Misc. There has been theorycrafting that some high security systems will look down on a pilot turning up in a figher like the Hornet or Gladius and you'll need to do some work to be let in, whereas the civilian designed Origins would be allowed to pass. There has been some theorycrafting that there is a UEE Black Ops military version of the 350R doing sortees behind enemy lines...

It's all up in the air, basically. What it once was is not what it currently is and what it currently is may not be what it eventually becomes, even now...

I like to think Origins trick is hiding in it's name: Origin Jumpworks. I theorycraft the "Jumpworks" means they may have some propriatary tech to jump system to system without a jump hole, or at least let their larger ships through smaller holes. Imagine the advantage being able to get the 890J through a medium jump-point would bring.

This "GAME" is all about escape. But in many ways I think it will mirror real life. It's very exciting to me to find and mine a rich vein of a rare ore or mineral, and sell it. My personal character is a miner, a salvage guy, a space truck driver and a data runner/explorer. I may shed some of these roles depending on circumstances, but for now I find them all to be stimulating. To that end, I payed real money for some big industrial ships, and I set my goals high. #1 Have fun #2 Make space bucks #3 Buy a small fleet of luxury ships to charter out.(I want to keep 1 890j for my exclusive use though!). What I'm hoping is that CIG will put locations in game similar to real life luxury resorts like yacht clubs and ski resorts. Really special, exclusive places that will actually "recreate" your character as he/she engages in recreational activities(remember, our characters will age, suffer cumulative injuries, and eventually die). Just as in real life, we should look for ways to stay healthy and alive. But at this point in the game, you are correct. Luxury ships serve little purpose. I flew a phoenix around for awhile, but melted it to buy something more practical, and I CCU'd my 600i explorer to a Crusader Hercules. I'll buy them later with space bucks

But lets look at this game, its all about immersion, prison, survival mechanics, the time sink required just to get from your bed to the ship then to QT to a spot, to me this games core feature and why its so popular and bringing so many people into it is the immersion, right now its about the closest thing to actually living in a virtual world without the VR, I mean taking showers, going to the bathroom, food, water, the planet surfaces, gravity, injury status, FOIP system,, the list goes on and on about making this world an actual living breathing extension of yourself and that is why things like luxury ships work in a game like this because in the end we will make it work with roleplaying and providing CIG does what we think they will a 90% A.I. driven verse where anything is possible when you combine those elements.

I watch tons of SC videos where people create their own stories, create their own missions, create their own personalities and backgrounds, I actually love watching the videos more than playing the game because I see what this game is evolving into, again provided CIG pulls it off.

From my perspective, will there eventually generated missions for those that own certain types of ships? Yes, CIG has repeatedly confirmed that. I also suspect that in regards of those with Luxury ships, there will be reputational advantages for those owners & crews, such as less restrictive security sweeps, access to places that those without them can't go, items that are only accessible to them usually, etc. That's some of what you're really paying for when you shell out for the luxury tax, access to that which is restricted to others.
