Gun sales are up everywhere. Several friends have asked me about recommending a firearm for home safety, so I thought I'd cross post this here. My recommendation is the Keltec KSG 12 gauge shotgun for these reasons:

1) The 12 ga shotgun is the best home defense weapon because it is easy to handle and hit with, and with the proper ammo will not penetrate walls with enough force to kill people on the other side by accident. The 30 or so OO buckshot pellets fired with each shell each have low enough energy they can be bounced off a refrigerator door to shoot around corners, yet together they have enough stopping power to immobilize an aggressor instantly.

2) The KSG is a "bullpup" design, meaning it is very short and easy to handle indoors, and is easier to keep control of. Adversaries cannot so easily grasp and take control of your weapon, because it is short and out of their reach.

3) The KSG is slide action. Racking the slide of a slide action shotgun produces an easily identifiable sound that will cause burglars and other home invaders to flee, especially if you tell them what you are doing. That is the best deterrent you can get and deterrence is better than physical force.

4) The KSG carries twice the ammo of a traditional shotgun. That's important if you ever need to defend yourself.

5) The KSG is perfectly suitable for many other roles, including a wide variety of hunting sports. Practicing with a weapon is key to facility with that weapon, so this is a great choice. This is far and away a superior choice to any handgun.

In my expiriance the best home defense weapon is having a decent welfare system which looks after the citizens it serves and makes sure no one feels the need to break in to anyone else's home.

It's simple, but effective.

I'm not a big fan of shotguns for home defense due to the risk of collateral damage to things around them or they're holding (such as if they've taken an hostage.)

Still, at the end of the day the best home defense weapon is one you're comfortable and proficient with as well as can get to in a timely manner.

Not to mention you're currently living in Canada, we sort of frown on those sort of couch mounted home defence systems. Do what the rest of us do and keep a hockey stick somewhere in the house and politely ask for a moment to retrieve it.

But to be fair, Canada is actually ok with sawed-off shotguns, so there is some balance!

But it has to not keep them on welfare or make it that they can stay indefinitely on it too.

I'm staring at the Kraken, and because the Vanguard have the very narrow landing gear up front, it appears to me Vanguards will fit on the 4 small landing pads. What do you think? If it sits, it fits? Looks to me they'll fit, though the Cutty would not because it's landing gear is so wide.

I've been trying to get around the relatively slowish Q travel times of small and medium craft for deep space exploration. If the Kraken could sit 6 Sentinels and carry the Harbinger and Hoplite modules for them, that is like 18 ships carried and there's room inside for a couple Sabres besides.

So a Star G, Carrack, Polaris and Kraken would make a really nice exploration fleet, especially once you add all the small craft and vehicles they can carry. I do love the Vanguard however, and half a dozen Sentinel frames makes a powerful stealth bombing group, stealth recon group, pack of 8 player shuttles, etc. Seems just about right for 50 players on a three week adventure.

I accidentally discovered about 20 years ago that my Mossberg Persuader pump action shotgun could hold up to 8 rounds in the tube & another in the chamber if the limiter stick thing is removed. It actually was a happy accident as that plug fell out while I was cleaning it & I didn't notice until I'd accidentally stepped on it, which broke the original.

For when Charlie is inside the wire...

Nothing says I love uninvited "guests" like a sudden hug made out of a spray of metal speeding towards you that like an evil aunt that loves pinching cheeks.

Yeah! Im a big fan of the KSG, but for me personally, I find a sofa-mounted M134 to be a better solution for home defense.

Sweet machine, but until you can efficiently open a beer bottle with it, I can't call that an effectively TESTified multipurpose tool to get around those Canadian limitations for you chief.

It also leaves you with a fun home remodeling project....after the biohazard guys get done scraping the robber off your remaining drywall

You forgot to add that with the front grip and bullpup design it looks mean as hell compared to a "regular" shotgun lol
It might add a little to the deterrence factor, although I doubt the perpetrator cares much if hit by a regular or a cool mean piece.

I'm kinda sad that I can't own shit like that here (gun laws), but then again, there's rarely any need even to take out and load my "gas" gun.
Apart from the few times a year the Ukrainian mafiosos down the street do some family feuds with guns. Even then they are usually polite enough to use suppressors so they don't wake up the whole street in the middle of the night. Very thoughtful of them...

Wow, very well said.

EDIT:

I have bars on my windows and front door, so that's always an option. You're fucked in a fire but hey, your chances of getting robbed might be higher depending where you live.

In my expiriance the best home defense weapon is having a decent welfare system which looks after the citizens it serves and makes sure no one feels the need to break in to anyone else's home.

Come to the US when you get a chance, it's done for sport. Gang violence for the sake of gang violence. Getting high on coke and robbing houses is one hell of a thrill my cousin told me.

EDIT2: I'm in my office in the garage, so its a bit rough. We had to have them in Miami, it's a bit more secure than relying on a firearm alone.

Perhaps you can reinforce those walls with steel plating so that those behind the walls can safely enjoy that moment's remix of Bodies by Drowning Pool.

It would technically be more akin to "Let the bodies hit the ceiling, the lampshades, stove, ect." Pretty much most things EXCEPT the floor.
