Another remake, that's all they do this days remake of older movies and series.
Seem a lot like the writing of movie/series stories have dried out last decade.

Not that I don't like remake movies and series, some got way better than original.
But still, watching a movie/series when you know the ending it have to be seriously good.

Wounder where all the good writers went.... oh! Right they died or stopped writing cause they don't get payed enough.

hmm... 🤔

I don't see it as a remake. I see it as an attempt to revive an underappreciated Science Fiction franchise.

So far, we've only had the 1984 Movie (which was fun but campy and hasn't aged well) and a couple of low budget Scifi Channel miniseries.

In terms of actual cinematic potential, Dune Messiah and Children of Dune are even better than the first Dune novel. If Harry Potter and Star Wars spawned a dozen movies, the Dune Franchise (Being the grandfather of modern Science Fiction) deserves at least a Trilogy treatment.

With regard to Dune's themes (Religion, Politics, Environmentalism, the decline of Empires, the dangers of Personality Cults, etc.) Something like this is especially relevant today.

Quick @Montoya ! Ban TESTies from sseing this movie before it's too late!

The handling of the above mentioned themes worries me. Hollywood has a very bad track record recently with this type of content. If it follows the books and that coincides with our own politics a bit and such, then it's fine, but I don't want to be preached to in a scifi movie I'm tryin to enjoy as a form of escapism. If I want to listen to someones agenda pushing lies and bullshit, I just turn on any news channel on TV.

Love the trailer, except for the music, it just feels like generic background noise. I enjoyed it much more the second time without sound on, played at half speed so I could actually see something.
Also I think they have shown too much of the spectacle and action bits. They tend to do this a lot these days, like with the new Bond trailer...
But there were many amazing movies with very bad trailers before, so I hope this bodes well for this one lol

I'm a huge fan of the books. The entire franchise is all about religion, politics, and the dangers of having one individual dominate both.

There are characters in the books that warn of the concept of a God Emperor....long before the Warhammer 40k kids and their memes.

All films have 'agendas'. If a film's agenda doesn't coincide with your beliefs, you're free to not watch it. There are tons of films/books/video games that I stay away from. That's my right as is the creators of these mediums right to make them.

Even then the remakes have had a lot of flops recently, and I have a feeling it is the same cause of lack of new IP, committee creation/review, fear of offending, and taking a risk on a new flop.

Its a make or break remake.

I sure hope its good. Having read all of the extended Dune novels over the years, Dune remains a remarkably untapped sci fi universe with potential.

If only someone could boil it down to not be entirely too cerebral. My hunch is that it might better as a long running TV saga. But its settings really demand a big movie budget.

All films have 'agendas'. ....
Hahahaha, No. They don't.
They all have a message, true, but not necessarily a political agenda, and most importantly, not stupidly pushed in the viewers face like some movies recently did. Even if it's pushing the studio/directors political agenda, it can be done in ways not to distract from the story and enjoyment, and even get people on board to think. It can be done in a way it makes sense in the movie. Sadly this was not the case recently in quiet a few movies I would have probably liked otherwise, so I'm only cautiously optimistic and not as hyped as I would be otherwise.

Basically my English failed me and you misunderstood me. I'm not worried about What the message is. It's whatever they want it to be. I'm worried about How it's delivered.

I'll leave this here because I already wrote it before realizing I can actually sum this all up in the tldr below lol

I just want to see a good movie, regardless of what the message is, not out of context broken propaganda pieces stitched into an otherwise probably good movie like TLJ or Capn.Ironingboard, GhostWusters...
As you said, i have the freedom to skip a movie if I don't like it's message. I also have the freedom to watch it regardless, and criticize it. I can disagree with the message and still enjoy the movie if it's delivered well enough, then just move on with my life. I'm all grown up and shit ya know, despite being on these forums and paying for jpeg ships!
Btw, you know what's the difference between a propaganda piece and a message? With a propaganda piece you are told what to think, instead of making you think. The first is used by dictators/god emperors. I prefer the later...

Two examples from the same franchise on good and bad delivery:

SW Ep1-3 had an anti-war message and a fair warning about giving up your rights for "safety", and creating a dictator in the process. Very very relevant at the time cos Middle East wars, and spying at home. Obvious enough that grown-ups would pick up on, and it was actually the plot of the movies, while it was still a fine kids movie, and proper good vs evil SW movie as well.
And the message is still very relevant today, even if it applies to different people, governments, actions, and corporations and so on. It makes sense in the context of the movie and in the real world, without clashing with the story and the universe it's told in.

Then there's TLJ's casino planet scene which made absolutely no fucking sense in the plot, apart from being an exposition piece about anti-gun, anti capitalism, pro commi propaganda, put in very blatantly, breaking immersion. It made no sense in-universe to have that monologue, it made no sense for the characters to spend more than a second on it at that very point in time, and it was fully irrelevant to the actual plot in the end, even though they could have integrated it in many ways that would have made sense, and could have made for a fun time for the viewers!

For example, after they find the thief dead, they do a daring heist in which they steal the plans to the star destroyers secret self destruct button from an evil weapon trader, only to discover that their own ships have it as well and they have to fight their way back to their fleet to save them. See? I integrated the "evil guns, evil capitalists selling to both sides" bit, in a way that it would be in the PLOT of the movie. It would make sense to have the scene preaching for 2 minutes to the viewer about those ppl being the worst evil ever, because we could see that they are in the context of the movie! And as the audience is not as stupid as hollywood likes to think, we could actually make the connection to the real world without them over-explaining it for no apparent reason.

Instead they go into the casino, do a speech about capitalism bad, gun bad! get caught for a parking offense and have their ship impounded for no real reason (I guess CR modeled the new landing system on this scene ), steal some animals from the stables after talking about how the poor kids working there are slaves, so they leave the kids there, which obviously, by their own logic, leads to the kids being severely punished later for allowing these two to free the animals...
Plot wise, all they did is out-of-character speeches, and they assured the stable boys get a good whipping. That's not a great delivery of the message imho, regardless of the content of the message.

They can make whatever movie they want ofc, I never said they shouldn't, I just wish that if they make a movie about something I like, Dune in this case, that they make it in a way I enjoy to watch.

TLDR: It's not the message, it's how it's delivered.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They have cool Ornithopters! And watching Jason Momoa throwing ppl around is always a fun time for me, and even more fun for the wife, although he seems to have too many clothes on in this movie. And I heard from an inside source that he read part of the script and it's looking very faithful to the books, even if it's taking a reverse approach to the characters. So far, I'm on board with this!
Not a huge fan of Duke's actor, looks a bit too weak for all the fight scenes, but I've seen that guy from the vampire movies who now plays batman pull off some pretty deep acting in another movie, so I'm not judging Duke yet.

So am I but I feel that specificity is important here. I liked Frank Herbert's books. The ones his son put out though...I'm trying to read the whole series in chronological order, started with the Butlerian Jihad trilogy and it has been a struggle. I'm currently on Navigators of Dune and I feel like I'm punishing myself but I want to know the whole mythos from beginning to end.

All good man. We'll agree to disagree. :o7:

The movie may very well bomb. I do have faith in Denis Villeneuve though. He's fast becoming this decade's Chris Nolan. Seems like everything he does turns to gold.

Some movies should never get a remake, but this looks like an exception!
Agree 100%, especially since the original one was a really shit movie on the realization side (missing special effect in combat scenes and non-sense sprinkle all over the movie....).

I've to say 'tho that I like the original sanworm and idratation armor more then the new ones...
